WASHINGTON (AP) - A White House spokesman says President Barack Obama believes women should be admitted as members to the all-male Augusta National, home of the Masters golf tournament.

White House press secretary Jay Carney says Obama's "personal opinion is that women should be admitted" to the golf club.

Why would a black be wanting to be a member of a private all-white club?

Augusta is not an all-white club. The first black member joined in 1990. It is an invitation-only club, so it simply took until a black was in the circle of friends of the current members for one to be invited.

It does classify itself as a 'single genger' club, however. So, males only. And, even thought they call the annual membership low (<$10,000 annually), the members are typically very, very rich.

The membership list, updated as of 2004, is here.

Legally, they would be fine. Same as you,, excluding anyone you please from your bridge club.
But are you actually arguing that no private, males only, social clubs should exist? Do you feel that christian clubs should be forced to open membership to athiests? The Catholic preisthood to women?
Tell us wise one, where is the line?

Does he also think that white Congressmen should be allowed to join the Black Caucus? Here in Chicago a white alderman is being denied to be part of the Black Caucus and the majority of his ward is black. Cut the crap!

Is the Black Caucus about those elected officials who are black, or those who represent black people?

That’s right, but I believe you are wrong if you believe it wasn’t previously anti-black by policy. That was quite uniformly the way of the South.

My point was that for the likes of you it sounds as if excluding blacks as a policy would be fine—since you’ve no greater defense for the anti-female policy.

I suppose you’d be okay with our GOP nominee belonging to a church that still forbid blacks from the ministry—as Romney’s did until 1978?

Did it track the social norms of it's time? Yes, as do we all. And as that norm changed, they did, too. Did it take a while? Yes.

But, it is not specifically 'white-only' presently as you implied.

I never mentioned blacks, you did locoweed. I think women should be excluded from Augusta. I bet rich black men want to have some wholesome male comraderie, and escape the female BS sometimes too!

A White House spokesman has just clarified the president’s statement: “President Obama did not actually mean ‘women’ women, rather he meant girly-men much like himself.”

That was quite uniformly the way of the South.

I find this comment intriguing. Segregation in the South was uniform only in the middle and upper classes and mainly in the cities. The lower middle class, country folk and poor were integrated.

My mother grew up on a self-suffient farm (poor) in the South, living on the same land as the black share-cropper families that worked the land with her parents, who owned the farm. The share-croppers' kids were were main friends outside her siblings. A share-cropper's daughter was her best friend growing up. The share-croppers' wives and older daughters were her babysitters. The families ate Sunday dinner together after church every week.

And this life was common in that part of Texas at the time.

Please don't paint with such a broad brush. I am tired of being called racist because I was born and raised in Texas.

Hello, Augusta is historically upper class.

Also, Jim Crow laws of course tended to be applied uniformly.

I wasn’t accusing you of racism at all, though I believe you were disingenuous in claiming that Augusta only first admitted a black in 1990 because the members hadn’t had any black peers until then.

My reading skills are fine. This statement is present tense and states they are white-only.

And ill just say it, men form such groups, formally and informally, to escape the endless stress women bring into social settings. Can men never escape? Even in a private group?

Agreed. Men and women are just different on so many levels - and sometimes each needs a break from the other.

Besides, does NO ONE know what the word "Golf" means? Very simple: "Gentlemen Only Ladies Forbidden."

I don't even need a flame suit, my wife doesn't read FR. :>)

Admitting women is the only way Obama would qualify for membership.

Not in an election year! Not like you can expect him to run on his record.

Yeah, no kidding, string me up I guess,,, but I don’t want boys in the girl scouts, don’t want girls in boy scouts, women priests, and men walking into the womens fitting rooms.
What kind of Soviet silliness is it that a group of men, forming a private social club to do something they enjoy,, must include people they would rather not socialize with? Its an amazing disconnect to think that its conservative to force this.
And interestingly,,if someone DEMANDS to join Augusta, what kind of attitude will she have when she’s there?

I was not disingenuous at all. Potential Augusta members are part of a very exclusive group: extrememly weathly men who know each other personally, mainly through business connections. Just go check out the list and see how many were executives for the same coporations. This is a group that has not had blacks in it until only recently due to other factors.

They were discrimiating for reasons other than race. And still do. Yet you imply that they are 'all-white' as if by design. They are 'all-rich-and-know-each-other'; nothing more, nothing less.

To imply otherwise is a soft accusation of rasim that they do not deserve. I tire of the 'inclusive' mindset that demands that any time something is not demographically perfect then someone is racist/sexist/etc.

Admitting women to Augusta National hasn't been in the news since that woman tried to crash the Masters. Nobody gave a flying you-know-what. Who cares?

After a few years of silence a quick blurb on the news last night was followed by buttboy saying the messiah thinks women should be admitted for membership. The claim will be made (and not disputed) Augusta National submitted to ob. He made them admit women.

I wonder if he employs people to look for news stories such as this? The visual of the WH looking for “I got the power” stories is more than my brain can handle. Leadership? Hell no. Anything but.

I wonder what the shrinks say about someone constantly having to invent situations of power and leadership?

Obama is a very shallow thinker.

I don't assume this clown is capable of rational thought at all.
