I use the same set of excuses when I have people insisting that WE learn to speak Spanish.
Are we just inherently smarter, such that learning Spanish is easier for us to learn, than for a Mexican to learn English - or are the Mexicans just lazy? Which is it, are Mexicans too stupid to learn English, or too lazy?
If we move to a foreign country, I fully expect to learn the language of that country. My grandfather spoke French, Norwegion, German and Malagashi; and had to learn English when he came here. Apparently it wasn’t too hard for him, he managed to learn English in just a few years (not numerous generations). So, which is it? Stupid, or lazy?
My parents were both immigrants. I didn’t get to know my father because he passed away before I was born. However my mother carried her very distinctive accent untill her death. However one of the proudest days of her life was when she became a citizen. As with the rest of her family here in the USA my mother through all the years, even the depression, wanted to be a USA citizen and not the USA to be her homeland. So to address your question as to stupid or lazy I would say neither is a complete cause. Rather it is that some immigrants want the USA with its bounty to become their native land. The same goes for Muslims.
