Breaking: NBC Fires Producer Who Created False Zimmerman Audio By Matthew Sheffield Created 04/06/2012 - 7:55pm

NBC News has fired the producer it says was responsible for creating the deceptive audio recording of George Zimmerman communicating with a 9-1-1 operator, according to the New York Times.

The network is still refusing to release the name of the producer, although according to Times reporter Brian Stelter, the producer is based in Miami and has worked there for a number of years. According to Stelter's network sources, NBC is still insisting the deceptive edit was not done deliberatiely. The network has refused to say how exactly someone could accidentally have edited the tape to make Zimmerman appear to be racially motivated:

NBC News has fired a producer who was involved in the production of a misleading segment about the Trayvon Martin case in Florida.

The person was fired on Thursday, according to two people with direct knowledge of the disciplinary action who declined to be identified discussing internal company matters. They also declined to name the fired producer. A spokeswoman for NBC News declined to comment.

The action came in the wake of an internal investigation by NBC News into the production of the segment, which strung together audio clips in such a way that made George Zimmerman’s shooting of Mr. Martin sound racially motivated. Ever since the Feb. 26 shooting, there has been a continuing debate about whether race was a factor in the incident.

The segment in question was shown on the “Today” show on March 27. It included audio of Mr. Zimmerman saying, “This guy looks like he’s up to no good. He looks black.”

But Mr. Zimmerman’s comments had been taken grossly out of context by NBC. [...]

The editing of the segment was initially noticed by NewsBusters, an arm of the Media Research Center, a conservative media monitoring group. On March 31, NBC told The Washington Post that it would investigate. [...]

The people with direct knowledge of the firing characterized the misleading edit as a mistake, not a purposeful act.

While NBC has taken a good first step toward rectifying the situation, until the network releases the name of the person and explains its theory that the edit was not deliberate, its credibility is still under question.

Full Times story is here.

Williams complicity disgusts me, but I doubt he has much say about anything there. Higher ups (is it Comcast now ?) are surely calling the shots after taking direction from the White House. You know damn well that was happening when GE owned NBC.

Williams is not stupid. I don't know how he sleeps at night. A mega mil$ contract makes the medicine go down, I suppose.

Dan Rather and Mary Mapes are deeply saddened.

NBC needs to have it’s FCC License pulled.

Fat chance. Jim Clyburn's daughter is an FCC commissioner @ $160k per year.

Most of the problem you are stating comes from the preponderance of the shallow, disinterested, ignorant media consumer.

If they are going to accept the wall of noise put out by a LeftMedia that has been continually proven to be heavily biased and capable of outright lying, then there is not much we can do, short of developing our own media outlets and our own barrage of truth.

Every “news” source will be a “channel” on the Internet eventually. In my opinion, that, at long last, greatly levels the playing field.

But yes, we aren't there yet.

I expect the fired producer to get a tenured faculty position at the Columbia University School of Journalism.

Not the editor...a producer.

I should have read the other comments first. Both of you basically made the same point that I made a few comments ago, earlier than me.

Grab some popcorn. Will Al Sharpton boycott his own employer for firing that producer? Will he call his bosses at NBC racist? This is really going to get good.

I wish we had a time machine so that, for example, all the damage wrought by the lying Comrade Walter Cronkite, regarding the clear American victory during the Vietnam Wars’s Tet offensive, could be negated.

That was exactly what I was thinking as well. Before the Internet and before Talk Radio, most of us removed from an incident had now way of either knowing the truth. And those closely involved, such as the GIs 12,000 miles away who kicked the crap out of the Commies during Tet, had no way of knowing the lies Cronkite (may he burn in Hell) was telling.

Things are far different today. Citizens can be both reporters and editors, and the old guard media does not like that.

We no longer need to rely on them, and the more we see, the less we trust them.

Firing him is a start. Now Zimmerman sues NBC for $1,000,000+.

How about naming and blaming the culture at NBC that encouraged and fostered this fraud? And the culture of “journalism” departments at universities all over this country that promote advocacy of leftist agendas through propaganda over the representation of truth?

If I gave them an “internal probe”, they’d KNOW they’d been probed, by Jimminy!

One million? I think his lawyers should be demanding tens of billions in punitive damages to make sure every news outlet and poverty pimp in the world that got involved gets the point. they are all still printing cute little Trayvon photos and damning Zimmerman, the victim.

It isn’t only the removal of the dispatcher’s question, but also Zimmerman’s actual explanation of why he looked like he was “up to no good”.

Remember Jayson Blair of NY Times fame? Print media moves fast to expose plagiarism (at least it did in 2003). But broadcast media has much lower standards, it seems (I am grouping plagiarism and fabrication in the same ethical basket of journalistic misbehavior).
