Time for another what the? moment from Etch-a-sketch candidate Mitt Romney. In 2006, Romney didnt seem too bothered with gas prices. In fact, he said high gas prices were here to stay.
from the New Republic (emphasis mine):
"As he campaigns for president, Mitt Romney is ratcheting up his attacks on Barack Obama over high gas prices, putting the issue at the center of his economic message. He is calling for Obama to fire his Energy secretary, EPA administrator, and Interior secretary, saying they are to blame for high prices at the pump. No question in my mind that theseI call them the gas-hike triothat those three are on a mission to drive up the price of gasoline and all energy so that they can finally get their solar and their wind to be more price-competitive. Thats what they want to do, Romney said on Monday.
Curiously overlooked, though, is just what a shift this rhetoric is from the approach that Romney took on the issue of gas prices while governor of Massachusetts. Befitting his profile as a moderate Republican who cared about the environment, Governor Romney responded to price spikes by describing them as the natural result of global market pressures and by calling for increases in fuel efficiencythe same approach that he now derides Obama for taking as president.
At moments, Romney went so far as to make high gas prices out to be a welcome reality for the foreseeable future, one that people needed to learn to live with. When lieutenant governor Kerry Healey, a fellow Republican, called for suspending the states 23.5 cent gas tax during a price spike in May 2006, Romney rejected the idea, saying it would only further drive up gasoline consumption. I dont think that now is the time, and Im not sure there will be the right time, for us to encourage the use of more gasoline, Romney said, according to the Quincy Patriot Ledgers report at the time. Im very much in favor of people recognizing that these high gasoline prices are probably here to stay.
So, no only do we get Romney saying high gas prices are here to stay, but we see that he rejected the idea of lowering taxes! Good grief.
And the Un-Masking of Mitt Romney, the left-wing, Progressive Liberal, continues . . . | |
"If we must have an enemy at the head of Government, let it be one whom we can oppose, and for whom we are not responsible, who will not involve our party in the disgrace of his foolish and bad measures." - Alexander Hamilton |
The average price of gasoline in May 2006 was $2.95

America would be better off if we wrote in Ron Paul!
Romney would be a much worse president than Dr. Paul. The one I was rooting for wouldn’t throw his hat in the ring, so I believe that if it comes down to Obozo or Mitty, I’ll go with the one who hates the Fed the most!
Fantastic and most appropriate quote!
Gas prices fell from 2.10 to 1.98 recorded on May 19, 2006!

What a great characterization of the Republican front runner. This just gags me as I used to think that voters would plainly see candidates for what they stand for and spoke for...but we are about to get another Dole, McCain loser candidate, although I am voting for NEWT in the primary in TX whenever we have it (!!!)- thanks to LULAC and Dems who know Republicans cannot draw lines equally racist like Democrats do when they are in power (NOT-HAAA!).
I will support the nominee running against the current Pres., but if it is Mitt, that is ALL he will get, none of my hard earned money will be given to the lost cause.
Yesterday I paid $4.11 per gallon. It might be time to take my Harley out of storage.
I may very well be one more guy that has decided to NOT travel on vacation this summer, saving me around 5k.... while keeping that money of our economy.
**I would have voted for NEWT.
that money of our economy.=that money OUT of our economy.
This man is an flaming idiot. We are toast.
Romney is the economic expert, and he says the economy is recovering, so Obama must be doing OK. I don’t really see any reason to light my hair on fire about Obama.
