Advisor: Romney can “reset” back to moderate views for general election “like an Etch-a-Sketch”

Good grief! As if Romney needed any help looking like a flip-flopping liberal!

from Washington Examiner:

Ever since he launched his first bid for the presidency over five years ago, critics have argued that Mitt Romney’s conservative positions aren’t sincere, and that he would start to abandon them once he was no longer trying to appeal to the Republican primary electorate. I just never expected one of his chief campaign staffers to openly admit it. Yet feeling cocky after Mitt Romney’s strong victory in Illinois, top advisor Eric Fehrnstrom did just that.

Here’s the stunning exchange on CNN (viaGreg Sargent):

HOST: Is there a concern that Santorum and Gingrich might force the governor to tack so far to the right it would hurt him with moderate voters in the general election?

FEHRNSTROM: Well, I think you hit a reset button for the fall campaign. Everything changes. It’s almost like an Etch A Sketch. You can kind of shake it up and restart all over again.

This is an incredible admission and a window into the way Romney views politics. Romney ran two races in Massachusetts as a moderate and even a self-described “progressive,” before changing his positions in the run up to his first campaign for president. Just last month, he described himself as “severely conservative” at the Conservative Political Action Conference. But as Fehrnstrom statement suggests, Romney’s appeals to the right are simply a matter of positioning rather than principle, something that can easily be changed once the target audience changes.

Here’s the video (unfortunately from Think Progress):

Honestly, I can’t think of a better metaphor for Mitt Romney than “etch-a-sketch.”

And the Un-Masking of Mitt Romney, the left-wing, Progressive Liberal, continues . . .

See my tagline. It is not that often that Willard is candid, and this was one of those moments.

He was not ever a conservative. I do not understand why Republicans are falling for this crap.

Because most "republicans" are just like democrats who happen to live on the plantation on the other side of town.

I think the problem is the primaries come basically one state at a time and mostly in blue states like Iowa and New Hampshire that will rarely if ever vote GOP(conservative) in the 1st place. If I had it my way, the primaries for all states would be held on one day of the year in all 50 states just like the general election. My guess is southern states and lower midwestern and mountain states would have deep sixed Romney from the beginning and we wouldn’t be in this mess right now. I’m in a deep red state that hasn’t even had a primary yet, and I bet Santorum or Gingrich will have either dropped out or won’t even be on the ballot by the time the primary rolls around.

I would go with 10 primary dates with 5 regionally diverse states taking part on each date.

I must have missed where Romney ever espoused any conservative views.

He is going to go from running as a moderate in the primaries to being an open liberal in the general. He'll end up sounding more liberal than Bill Clinton in 1992.

Romney didn't say it.

I also think Primary voters should be the ones to vote for House and Senate leaders on the primary ballot. I think this might help keep the RINO’s from infiltrating the party leadership too. Of course right now, they totally control the party.

Maybe Romney will ask Hillary or Sheila Jackson Lee to be his running mate?

Just curious, how many anti-Romney articles do you post a day? Every time I see one on here it is from you. I honestly don't like the guy and being from New York, I doubt I will vote for him. But man, you are on a mission on here.

My comment:
“See my tagline. It is not that often that Willard is candid, and this was one of those moments.”

Your comment: “Romney didn’t say it.”

Bishop Willard’s comment:

You lose, sugar.

I still don’t get your comment, regardless of your tagline.

Romney didn’t make the etch a sketch comment, the one the thread is about. How could he be candid in a remark he didn’t make?

If the thread was about the comment you’re referencing, sure, you’d be correct.

I didn’t like it when people attributed the “I can see Russia from my front porch” to Sarah when she didn’t say it, I’m just applying the same to Romney.

...and sadly still draw a considerable amount of Republican votes.

As many as I can as often as I can up until the general election.

Those supporting him are going to own him AND his record when he eventually loses and lose he will.

I have it easy in New York. I don’t know what I would do if I lived in a swing state where my vote would really matter, but I certainly understand people who simply cannot vote for Romney. I wonder what the breakdown is on FR. What state are you in?
