Four cops shot inside a Brooklyn apartment would likely have been killed if the ex-con had reached for another weapon in his arsenal a sawed-off assault rifle with military-grade bullets.
After the smoke cleared from the Easter Sunday gun battle, police found a Ruger Mini-14 known as a poor mans assault rifle. It was loaded with bullets powerful enough to penetrate the ballistics shield Detective Kenneth Ayala carried into the apartment to protect the cops as they entered single file behind him.
Suspect Nakwon Foxworth, who was critically wounded in the shootout, fired a dozen shots from a 9-mm. handgun, but was steps away from the rifle.
Foxworth was shot before he could reach for his sawed-off assault rifle. And a good thing, too, said Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly. It was loaded with 20 .223-caliber bullets, the kind the military uses. Kelly couldnt help but consider the worst-case scenario. He could have done a lot more damage with an assault weapon he had no business possessing, the citys top cop said.

This must be an error. Guns are illegal in NYC.
“The print edition of this story is worse in its misinformation and anti-gun hysteria and propaganda, for example, referring to the ruger as a “semi automatic assault weapon”
CORRECTION: They refer to it as a “semi automatic assault rifle” in their print edition.
Frankly I'm tired of the New York Daily News just reaching out and stealing other people's news stories.
I have one of these. Can’t hit anything with it, tho.
Whew! Lucky cop! At our gun club we use only 7.62 Shorts, which are just powerful enough to pierce paper at 200 yards.
Ray Kelley is an idiot.
The several I have would have no trouble making good hits out to 300 yards
New York City is the only place in the WORLD that would call a Mini-14 an “assault rifle”. Please. It’s a nice rifle. But an “assault rifle” it isn’t. But then almost everything “they” (gun haters) call an assault rifle is not.
Must be full auto capable to be an assault rifle. Otherwise it’s just a rifle that “looks” like an assault rifle.
Idiots abound in these places.
An unregistered firearm in NYC in the possession of a felon? Nah, could not happen, it is illegal both city wide and federally. Was this printed on April 1st???
Gen. David Petraeus took a ... .223-caliber bullet ... the kind the military uses. through the chest and was out jogging two days later.
Rumor has it that gun collectors are giving hundreds of dollars for them.
They are a rare item.
I gots to get me some of dem “military grade” assault bullets.
Sadly, this is the (obviously faulty) logic of the gun grabbers.
WTH is a "sawed off" assault rifle? And why would you ever do it? I understand why you would "saw off" or shorten the barrel of a shotgun - in order to make it more maneuverable in tight spaces, spread the pattern quicker for rough point-and-shoot... But if you just want a short barrel semi-auto, get a pistol. Oh, wait, he had one of those. I think the Ruger was probably un-modified and the "reporter" was just going for sensationalism (gasp, no!) with the "sawed off" phrase because the weapon already has a relatively short barrel. Gee, I've got grand-dad's old lever action 30-30 with a short barrel. Is that a "sawed off" assault rifle? Back in his day they simply called it a "saddle gun."
Oh, and heavens above, he had "military" style ammunition for it. Lucky for the officers. Most people that know what they're doing use jacketed hollow points for home defense. They do far more tissue damage when they hit. However, armed forces are not allowed to use them (Geneva convention). I think I'd rather get a "simple" through-and-through from a FMJ round rather than a fist sized hole punched in me by a JHP. More stupid sensationalism by the "reporter" with "military" bullets. sheesh
Coupled with a semi-automatic assault weapon, no less!
One solitary nutjob (who got hisself shot, good riddance), this is serious! The government needs to do something!
I just priced one of these last week - $700 to $800, depending on what kind of “extras’ you want.
