Yesterday, Ann Romney was attacked by the left wing for being a stay at home mom. I think this is crazy. Over the years, I have witnessed left wing working mom’s smugness. My wife is a stay at home mom. Some people think that we live in the dark ages.
However, for us it was a conscious choice. We had long conversations about it. Our first child was born in 1991. At the time, my wife was a salesperson with Ortho Phara. Prior to that job, she worked at Advanced Care Products where she was one of the top salespeople in the nation.
I met her in business school at the University of Illinois. She can net present value with the best of them. We were both marketing majors. Ironically, in the new age of apps and technology, one of the most crucial things is how you market your products. Engineering and marketing skill are two of the most important things to success-especially when it comes to using social media.
Couples that make the choice to have a spouse stay home don’t enter into it lightly. Generally, it falls on the female to do it, but more and more males are starting to stay at home too. The transition taking place in our society from a corporate 9-5 job to a gig economy also allows flexible working schedules where one parent may stay home.
In my case, there was a definite opportunity cost to my wife staying home. We went from dual income (on her benefits) to a one income entrepreneur household. It was then we realized the crushing burdens the government puts on sole proprietors and entrepreneurs running their own business.
But paying that cost hopefully has benefitted my kids. My kids weren’t raised by a nanny. They didn’t go to daycare. They were raised by a person that had a business degree from one of the top business schools in the country. Undoubtably, that affects them.
I have noticed that city people come from two career families. Each spouse has a stimulating career outside the home. Most of the one career families I see live in the suburbs. I don’t look askance at anyone that makes the choices they did. Having a one career household worked for us. It might not work for other people based on what they want to do with their lives.
Ironically, because women decide to make these choices, it tends to affect their pay. Marianne Bertrand from the University of Chicago studied pay between women and men. She found that women get lower pay because they tend to self select into jobs that allow them to have more time with their families. They also will drop out of the work force and drop back in when the kids go to school. That is the dominant explanation for pay difference.
I think it’s really stupid to attack women that make the choice to stay home with their kids. They have chosen to undertake an incredible responsibility, raising the next generation of people that will move our country, and our society forward.
That might be a heckuva lot more important and fulfilling than winning that next case, designing that next marketing plan, or any other money making activity that people choose to make.
Jeff I think he missed the point. I doubt your wife has a cleaning staff, a cooking staff, a built in staff to run errands and shuttle the kids back and forth. I’m sure your wife spends extra time looking for sales and doesn’t have beauty treatments whenever she wants. You can’t compare a mother who stays at home because of wealth.
I don’t care if Ann had one child or ten - she would never be a comparison to a stay at home mom by choice and it doesn’t matter her degrees and from what university. That’s silly and more like boastful as if your wife gave up more than another mom!
I got an e-mail this morning. The Romney camp has alread come out with a bumper sticker depicting a mom with two children and it says:
“Moms Drive the Economy”

Speaking only from personal experience, having been there/done that, it’s much easier to let someone else look after the kids and go earn a paycheck than it is to stay at home.
And much less rewarding.
So happy I took the hard route, left the career, stayed at home, and molded them hour-by-hour, day-by-day.

I stayed home with my four kids. They are now grown up, ranging in age from early 20s to late 30s.
And guess what? Not a single one of them ever got tattoos or piercings, or ever got in trouble with the law.
And every single one of them is a well-adjusted, productive, and conservative citizen!
Was I just lucky? I think not. Staying at home with your children pays off -- not just personally, but for our society as a whole.
You are spot on!!!! I’m getting sick and tired of women feeling like they have to justify the choices they’ve made. Not only that, in defending their choice, they feel it’s necessary to denigrate all the women who didn’t choose the same path.
Ann Romney would have earned a lot more respect from me if ahe’d just told Rosen to buzz off and not try to convince us that she went through the same trials as all stay at home moms. She has a compelling life story; she should just stick to that.
I am pretty sure that is not what their life was like when the kids were small, at least according to what Rush was saying yesterday. Apparently they lived fairly meagerly while building their wealth and didn’t take money from their parents. I have not investigated this myself, but best to know for sure.
It took many decades of destroying the maternal instinct-—through Marxist ideology-—which changed the mindset of women to think strangers molding the worldview and character of their children could be “good” and “better” than by the natural biological parents. Orphanages and children deprived of a home were considered evil and unfortunate and were great obstacles which many children never even survived to adulthood.
Emotional health demands a maternal bond for the first seven years of life—an attachment which is broken leads to many dysfunctional behaviors—and especially the inability for people to form mature, long term relationships.
All mammals would kill if a stranger tried to take away their young (except “humans”)-—they protect them fiercely and when their young is removed-—like the scientists did in experiments-—those young can not function normally-—whether sexually or in normative ways as adults-—their neurosis is permanent.
Removing the mother from child is a sure way of dehumanizing man-—removing trust and loyalty which is formed in the first few years of life.
The Marxists changed the words “day care” to “preschool” to fool mothers into thinking that strangers were better for their children then themselves. It is absurd that “mothers” could believe such lies.
Everyone interested should study “Attachment Theory” which augments the thinking of Piaget and Erikson and even Freud.
Damage young children emotionally by removing caring mothers is the most effective way to destroy civilization and create inhumane ACORN type zombies who can’t think and be logical-—they are denied Natural Law rules while young which is the foundation of Logic and Reason in understanding reality and the world in rational way.
When our second child came I worked all the overtime I could get so my wife could stay home and raise the kids. I didn’t have time to deal with the finances so she did that and paid the bills and kept the accounts. We always paid our bills on time and didn’t buy what we couldn’t afford. Thanks to her all these years later we have a very strong credit rating which we don’t use.
Perfect and that was my point.
Oh please they have been wealthy for a while. The wealthy are always building their wealth, that’s what they do.
Thats what THEY do? Oh Please! Non wealthy people are building wealth if they want to and the wealthy are often squandering it.It is not “what they do.” Wealthy and non wealthy are not static categories. Wealth can be gained or lost. Ever read the autobiography of J.C. Penny?
In any case, I took a moment to look up the piece I was referring to and am posting it to you if you care to listen and then judge rather than just judge.
Can we all stop using the childish word “Mom” like we’re a bunch of 7 yr. olds?
