Driving back to college one day I heard a notice on the radio that the Indianapolis cops were in pursuit of some guys fleeing south on Madison Avenue ~ so watch out because shots were being fired.

There I was on Indiana 37, one of the routes that road merged into at several points so I decided to pull over behind some trees along the highway until this was over. Just then I saw them coming in my rear view mirror ~ made it behind the trees just in time ~ and they were shooting at each other!

While I crawled down as deep as I could get in the compartment in front of the seats ~ talk about heart beats and adrenalin ~ I was still jumped up the next day!

One of your Roads is wrong in your post. I was trying to picture where this happened as I don't recall it. I assume you were headed south to Bloomington (returning to college). It sounds exciting but Madison Avenue doesn't cross or merge into 37.

Maybe it was long before I was conceived. I was born and raised on the South Side. :o)

“Driving back to college one day...”

Long before my college days, my Granddad brought me a bicycle...it was a rebuilt bike with skinny tires...and I was 8 years old (1944). He brought it to Des Moines on the train. Dad hitched up a trailer to the car and we went to the train station to get the bike - it was after dark. I decided I would ride home in the trailer with the bike and my Dad said ok. We had only gone a couple blocks and we heard sirens, then say a car pass through an intersection ahead of us with police cars in hot pursuit. And then we heard multiple gun shots, including shotguns. Needless to say, I decided that being inside the car for the rest of the trip home was much safer!

There are some experiences in our lives we never forget. And btw, we found out later that the perps were ‘escapees from the Amana Colonies’ out for a joy-ride in a stolen car. And apparently they were from a very dark skinned family in the Amana’s. :)
