He probably intended to say "Malvinas" to stick it to the U.K. once again and it came out as "Maldives." "Maldives" is a gaffe of course but "Malvinas" would have been a diplomatic outrage. Either way, what an continuing embarrassment this petty little man is!

At the time of the Monroe Doctrine, Argentina claimed the Falkland Islands but apparently there were no people living on the islands at the time. The British have been in control since the 1830s except for a couple of months in 1982.

If the British could be forced to give up land they have had since the 1830s (which isn't going to happen), that would encourage Mexico to seek the recovery of land it lost in 1848 and 1853. Not that the US would cede Texas, the Mexican Cession lands or the Gadsden Purchase, but it would cause the activists to scream a little louder.
