Strike threat at Hostess could kill off Twinkies

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- The maker of Twinkies and Wonder Bread heads to court Tuesday to try to throw out its union contracts, in a battle that leaves the iconic baker's future very much in doubt.

Hostess Brands, which makes Ding Dongs and a variety of other sweet treats, is asking the bankruptcy court in White Plains, N.Y. to tear up labor agreements, which would, among other things, allow Hostess to change how it funds union pensions. The hearing is expected to last two days.

The International Brotherhood of Teamsters and the Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers, together represent more than three-quarters of the 18,500 workers at the company.

The Teamsters have vowed to strike if the judge agrees with management's request and dumps the labor deals.

But both management and the unions agree that the company is unlikely to survive a strike.

Proving once again the stupidity of unions. They deserve to die.

Those Maoist unions would rather see Hostess go down rather than give up a single dime.

So? There are plenty of people who would fill those jobs in a heart beat. Get rid of the union and restructure it. Look what Reagan did to Air Traffic Controllers? We need more standing up to the thugs in the unions.

They’ll just sell the name, the recipe and the trademarks to some non-union bakery and be done with it.

That's not a bad idea at all...but there's a catch. Not long ago,Verizon workers (Verizon's the landline phone company in parts of the Northeast) went on strike demanding more of everything (naturally).During the strike their "workers" sabotaged phone lines, switching stations, etc causing enormous problems for customers.

As I said earlier, the unions would rather see Hostess go down rather than give an inch.If "scabs" are brought in count on union sabotage.

I remember when scabs were protected by L.E. during strikes. Of course, now that most L.E. are Union, those days are gone.

Exactly! Some people just don’t understand supply and demand economics.

This is a great demonstration of the predatory behavior of unions, forget that this is Hostess and never mind the jokes about Twinkies, etc., unions today would indeed rather see the businesses their members are working in FAIL, rather than to compromise one single iota. The union philosophy can be summed up perfectly as "eff you, eff management, eff ANYbody who doesn't agree with us, as long as WE GET OURS."

There may still be legitimate need for the existence of unions so far as work place safety is concerned, but that pretty much is the limit so far as their usefulness is concerned.

I’m surprised that there are humans involved in making Twinkies. I just assumed they were concocted and packaged by machines.

"There's a box of Twinkies in that grocery store. Not just any box of Twinkies, the last box of Twinkies that anyone will enjoy in the whole universe. Believe it or not, Twinkies have an expiration date. Some day very soon, Life's little Twinkie gauge is gonna go... empty. "

This is a gastronomic catastrophe of the first order. The culinary world will be shaken to the very roots.

Or not.

But I don't see a union win coming out of this, because if they win, they lose.
