Romneys TV interview reignites dog-on-roof controversy
Philadelphia Inquirer ^ | 4/17/12 | Amy Worden

There's no other way to put it, Mitt and Ann Romney stepped in it in their first joint network TV interview.

They fielded lots of questions during the interview which aired last night, but none more pointed then the one animal lovers were waiting for from ABC News anchor Diane Sawyer:

So why did you strap your dog to the roof of the car?

Ann Romney defended her husband’s decision to put their dog, Seamus, in a crate and lash it to the roof for a 12-hour drive to Canada in 1983, saying he "loved it" and knew it meant he was going on vacation with the family.

"It was, to me, a kinder thing to bring him along than to leave him in the kennel for, in a kennel for two weeks," she told Sawyer.

[We pause to ask ourselves two things, a) Why didn't they put some luggage on the roof and let Seamus ride inside? b) Do any of Ann Romney's $100k dressage horses ride in rusty and rickety livestock trailers exposed to elements? Ah, no.]

Asked if he do the same thing again, Mitt Romney said, “Certainly not with the attention it’s received.”

Wow. Clearly 30 years later, the Romneys still think it's ok for an animal to ride atop a car, at highway speeds no less....

"Always those trips were fun. It was about 15 miles each way down Highways 168, 75 and 431 with speeds up to 70mph and we'd be sitting in the back drinking/spilling cans of Dr. Pepper all over ourselves."

Same type of experience here... We used to go on camping trips and sometimes rode hundreds of miles in the back of a pickup truck. My dad had a green canvas canopy he put over the back when it was raining. We called it the “Army Truck”. We didn't realize we were being abused. We thought it was fun!

Yes! Obama knowingly ATE DOGS and brags about it.

I think Romney just got his "get out of jail free card" on this issue. That should end this as fast as Bill Maher's greatest hits clip reel ended the Rush Limbaugh "slut" controversy.

where I come from it is not unusual to put your dog in the back of a pickup, untethered and travel - sometimes long distances, sometimes in the rain,

Around here to, you see dogs in back of pick up’s most every day, what conserns me more is that often you see drivers with dogs on their lap as they are driving, and this is often older females, go figure

At least they opted to take their pet on the vacation. I know many families who rather then take the pet with them, have them caged-up in a kennel.

When I grew up in central Texas in the 1960s and 1970s, it was not unusual to put your kids in the back of a pickup, untethered, and travel - sometimes long distances, sometimes in the rain, sometimes at high speeds.

Some of my fondest memories as a kid were riding down the highway in the back of the pickup holding onto the dog to keep it from jumping out.

I think there’s a big difference between riding in the back of a pick up and riding on the roof.

He didn't strap the dog to the roof of the car. The dog was in dog crate that he strapped on the roof of the car.

wind going through the holes in a crate has got to hurt. Was there any type of windshield in front of that crate?
In a pick up truck, there is a windshield. There isn’t one on a roof.

There should be an experiment conducted. Place a person in a crate on a car roof and drive 70 mph. Then place same person on the back of a PU and drive at 70mph. Then ask the person which ride they enjoyed most. Better yet, have the person blindfolded so they don’t know where on a vehicle they are.

The dog got ahold of a turkey before the trip and got sick with diarrhea. Up on the roof he went in the crate.

I can relate. My Golden picked the turkey carcass out of the trash one year and had violent diarrhea. We were gone for the day and when we came back it smelled as if someone had died. Ended up having to just trash an entire 10x12 carpet.
