Obama Once Needed 'to Take a Subway or a Bus Just to Find a Fresh Piece of Fruit’ By Penny Starr April 18, 2012

(CNSNews.com) - Barack Obama's vision as president is shaped by the fact that he knows what "it's like to take a subway or a bus just to find a fresh piece of fruit in a grocery store," Housing and Urban Development Secretary Shaun Donovan said last week.

Donovan seemed to be suggesting that the president had once lived in what First Lady Michelle Obama now refers to as a "food desert"--a place without a nearby supermarket. The First Lady has launched an initiative to eliminate these places.

“Why has all this work been such a priority for the president and every one of us in the administration?” Donovan said. “Because he knows what you know: He knows what it’s like to walk the halls of public housing because he’s worked there.”

“He knows what it’s like to walk the streets of some of our cities’ poorest neighborhoods because he’s lived there,” Donovan said. “What it’s like to take a subway or a bus just to find a fresh piece of fruit in a grocery store.”

Donovan also said the president had to “wonder” about whether he could “afford a college education or decent health care” or be “judged” unfairly.

I can walk from Eli’s bread factory all they way down to WTC and hit grocery stores every other block, convenience stores and well fruit stands in Washington park and other parks.

I hear ya, Obama. Fresh pieces are tough to come by, and unless you have radar, it’s hard to tell the fruits.

Incorrect. Obama is campaigning on "A fruit on every corner. Preferably a fresh piece."

Obama isn’t getting ready to tell his Brown Shirts to “loot the fruit” , is he?

A lot of Korean fruit stores in LA.

There’s always roof top gardens or go green and put a hanging plastic bottle garden in their windows. Set a couple of tomatoes outside their outside door in containers. Of course, those would get vandalized in no time which is the same reason there are no grocers. Gee, couldn’t be the hoodie wearing thugs’ fault.

"to take a subway or a bus just to find a fresh piece of fruit"

OK, so "a piece of fruit" - what does that mean, exactly (in Obama's world)? Is it some sort of urban code not necessarily about, say an apple?

When I was a kid there were 15 of us living in a shoebox in the middle of the road. We had to get up at 4:00am and lick the road clean with our tongues. And every night we’d eat a handful of cold gravel. Wood & rocks? Luxury.

In LA there are people on every third street corner selling bags of fres... well fruit and vegetables. Are there no street venders in the east.
