We need 1 million new businesses every year to keep us on the right track. Instead we have only about 400,000 firms starting up. We need a labor market that creates over 400,000 jobs a month. We haven't seen anything like that. In fact, through the first few months of 2012, layoff announcements have risen 18 percent from a year ago, and hiring plans have dropped 82 percent.
Millions of people who had good private sector jobs now have to depend on the government for life support.
No wonder America's inflation-adjusted, after-tax income, which is the fuel for the consumer spending that drives the economy, has barely risen in the past six months. No wonder about half of Americans believe that their real income will contract in the coming months, while only about one fifth expect it to increase.
Don't talk "recovery" to these people, especially if you pause at a gas pump. The consumer remains constrained as well by the ratio of total household debt to after-tax earnings. It was down to 117 percent last year from a peak of 131 percent, but is still above the pre-bubble rate of 70 percent. We are still in an era of deleveraging, rising savings rates, home price deflation, and squeezed real income, all of which will continue to affect consumer spending.

Zukerman can actually write a very good column when he wants to, esp. if he drops his liberal mentality and looks solely at the facts.
This column is an indication that one of the top old-time liberals has opened his eyes and mind to reality, and tells it like it is.
Congrats, Mort. Welcome back to the real world.
Morty, baby...put that in your NY Daily News (the paper of record for Harlem, Bed-Sty, Brownsville, ENY, etc) and we can watch a wiener roast on 42nd. St.
Zuckerman makes the mistake of assuming that Obama’s policies were intended to benefit the average American.
He had me going until I read his list of “solutions”:
— One year of tech school or college at taxpayer expense
— More H1B visas for foreigners
No thanks. How about channeling Higher Ed financial aid to those in the engineering or the hard sciences vs. Liberal Arts/Sociology?
Mort Zuckerman dropped Obama about a year into his term -- recognizing that his economic plan was a socialist one.
And he wrote a column at the time to make it public -- admnitting he'd made a mistake in supporting Obama.
Mort's a liberal. But he is one of the last survivors of a rare breed of honest liberals...
Creating more dependence on government, and creating more food-stamp recipients, and creating more unemployment, is what Obama and the democrats want. Those people will become so dependent on government handouts, that, they’ll have to vote for Obama and democrats, in order to keep getting their “free” government services and handouts.
People who give up hope, become dependent, and ‘loyal’ democrat voters. They’re left with no other choice if they can’t find work, and getting them back to work would not be of benefit to the democrats nor to Obama, who need those out-of-luck voters.
“Zuckerman makes the mistake of assuming that Obamas policies were intended to benefit the average American.”
The mistake is even more basic that that. Obama didn’t ever have the semblance of a program, other than to do whatever he could to cause the collapse of our economy so he could install a Marxist System!
He has to be a magical thinker if he supported an anti-American community organizer from Chicago for President and expected anything but a ghetto disaster. Anyone over 35 knows what the left is and what the left does. Is he stupid or evil?
I’ve listened to Mort weekly on The McLaughlin Group for years now. He’s another old-style, reasonable, moderate Dem (unlike the Leftist, BHO-loving, shrill old biddy Eleanor Clift), and he’s not been pleased with Obama for quite awhile now. In fact, Mort’s sounding more conservative all the time - fiscally for sure. Pretty obvious that he views BHO as a disaster and will NOT vote for him again.

I really don’t much care what anyone stupid enough to have voted for Obama has to say.....
Oops - sorry about that!
Well duh
Gee, Mortimer, do you really think so? A stopped clock is right twice a day, so Mort gets a gold star for this brilliant deduction.
That is Obama's secret agenda. Greater dependency means a bigger voter base.
