The Battle for Wisconsin
The Weekly Standard ^ | April 30,2012 | JOHN MCCORMACK

Governor Scott Walker is facing the fight of his political life. On June 5, in the third gubernatorial recall election in U.S. history, Wisconsin voters will either choose to keep Walker in office or elect a Democrat. Polls show a tight race with Walker hovering at or slightly below 50 percent and holding a small lead over potential opponents. Walker won’t know which Democratic opponent he’ll face until May 8, when the recall primary is held. Meanwhile, he’s letting the state of Illinois serve as a stand-in.

Speaking on April 19 to machinists in blue-collared shirts, jeans, and boots at the Trace-A-Matic Corporation, Walker contrasts Wis-consin’s record with that of its neighbor to the south. “A year ago their unemployment rate was above 9 percent,” he says. “And today, a year later, it’s still above 9 percent because they made some poor choices. They raised taxes on businesses and individuals. On individuals, believe it or not, they raised it by 66 percent.”

And Wisconsin? Unemployment has dropped from 7.7 percent to 6.9 percent since Walker took office. Property taxes are down for the first time in 12 years. A $3.6 billion deficit was eliminated without lots of layoffs. The message resonates with the machinists. Almost all applaud enthusiastically for Walker.

“Unions had a place in history,” says Mike Payne, one of Trace-A-Matic’s machinists. “But I think it went to the other extreme. And I think to diminish them a little bit is to really benefit us because that brings things back to a fairer level.”

Payne is right. Over time, Union officials come to think of themselves as counterparts of management. To have effect, they must be the ones who make proposals to management, that the grass roots don’t matter. They exercise power the members just provide “input.”

WI was "blue" thanks to the youth vote in 08, but look at 10 turnout and see the trend, it does not bode well for RATS or recalling Walker.

This is a fight between freedom and tyranny. Walker deserves the Congressional Metal of Honor for heroism above and beyond the call of duty. He is single handedly showing that honest, good proven methods can work and maybe will bring back the responsible people to run for office. What he is enduring is criminal and should be loathed by everyone who want responsible government. I don't live in the state but have sent him a contribution. Com’on Freebees, show him the color of your money. He can't lose this election. We can't allow it to happen. You want more Obama’s in government, sit on your pocketbooks.

A lot will ride on appeal of the Voter ID Act.

Without that act in effect, the vote fraud factor will put a generic dem over the top.

If he loses, then America has indeed devolved into an abyss. He would be defeated by a cabal of public sector workers determined to secure their tenured lucrative sinecures, dependent government beneficiaries, deluded minorities, and the culturally decadent. Productive decent Americans will have become a hard pressed minority. This election is also a predicate to the national election in November. The only long term hope is that somehow minorities finally realize how they are being played by the hypocritical democrats. They are herded into failing public schools for the last three generations where they are poorly educated and hence easily controlled. they are denied vouchers and choice.Of course hypocritical democrats like Obama, Pelosi, Rahm Emmanuel “choose” good private schools for their kids but deny the option to minority parents. The Democrats fund abortion clinics in minority neighborhoods to actually kill them. They buy off “leaders” like Sharpton and Jackson to keep them in line. When minorities finally begin to realize what is being done to them and seek redress for these crimes, then the cabal will be less of a danger not only to Wisconsin but all of America.

I agree with you, 100%. If Scott Walker successfully defends his office and remains governor of Wisconsin in June, Obama will be handily defeated in November!!! So.....citizens of Wisconsin, the futre of our nation is in your hands. You either vote for Walker, freedom, liberty & opportunity, or....you vote for an Obamabot, socialism, tyranny, rule by thugs/goons & dictatorship!!!

might have it been more appropriate to title the article . . .

“The Battle for America”

obviously the statist, marxist union thugs, socialist mindless (i know, redundant) teachers, never learned how to think parents, communist taught students, race pimping pieces of trash know how important is this battle.

And the union has an incentive to screw individual members. Given a situation where a company says it must either lower union benefits or go bust, the smart thing to do would be to preserve jobs by lowering benefits. But the union doesn't want to look "weak" in its negotiations with other companies, so it says no, the company goes under, and all of the union members at that company lose their jobs.

But the union stays in business, and continues to pay its officers wages commensurate with those paid by business management. If you are fortunate to work for the NEA, you can make as much as urban school administrators. The schools, of course, never go out of business.
