I remember one of the many toys in my childhood 'arsenal of democracy' was the highly realistic Mattel
'Tommy Burst' machinegun (fired caps) modeled after the weapon carried by Vic Morrow:

Mattel used to be quite the purveyor of juvenile weapons!

We had cap guns too, but none that looked as cool as this! :-)

Funny. I remembered the coolest toy gun I wanted as a kid was a plastic M14 that seemed as real as you could get. I googled "toy m14" and the first pic I saw was it...

I remembered the silver plastic guard on the top of the barrel...I could never figure out a way to buy it. But boy, did I ever lust after it.
