Some of the Bishops may not have been as forthright as they're being now, but many of them were, and were clear about what the Church teaches on what the Non Negotiable issues were, and still are.

Catholic priests by the very nature of their vocation tend to be on both sides. There were catholics for and against Hitler, for instance.

truth be told, the Church usually has more priests on the wrong side than on the right side. That is because the wrong side is where most of the people that need help are located.

As you said, they should have been more clear on what the Church teaches on what the Non Negotiable issues were, and still are.

The Nazi's came to power by a lopsided margin of protestant over Catholic. Should we have let Htiler take a bigger bite out of them for penance? Should protestants now support the alligator taking a bigger bite out of Catholics?

I think you have totally and ignorantly gotten the alligator lesson upside down.
