If you're worried about what sort of people will wind up on the Supreme Court after 2013, you'd better start working your tail off on the US Senate races, because that's where the next high court picks will be confirmed or denied.
I agree and I think you have found the key issue into why there is so much vitriol on free republic towards the nomination of Gov. Romney. It was expressed here many times as: "If only (Newt, Santorum, Perry, etc) would drop out then (Newt, Santorum, Perry, etc) can show he is the conservative that can beat Romney."
If we had a conservative caucus organization that selected a conservative candidate by a majority only voting process we could select a candidate that conservatives could rally behind. At least they would know that a majority of their fellow conservatives agreed.
But more importantly the conservative organization could then contribute money and manpower to their candidate giving them a ready made organization to combat the elites choice who will already have state republican organizations at their disposal.
I think Rick "got the memo" and FreeRepublic had nothing to do with his decision to drop out of the race.
The fact that Romney is just sailing through this thing shows me what a minority we are.
For all of our back and forth, we didn't seem to make much of a difference in the 'anyone but Romney' vote.
Ron Paul should have dropped out months ago and advised his followers to choose another candidate. They still call in to talk shows and attempt to lambast us all for our blindness and stupidity. They stayed home.
Rick's followers did an equally stupid thing by voting for Rick, who was not in the race ... in spite of the warnings that a vote for Rick was a vote for Romney which is a vote for ozero.
