On good-bye tour, Gingrich touts ability to be Romney surrogate

By NBC's Andrew Rafferty

MOORESVILLE, NC -- Even though his presidential campaign "will go bye-bye," Newt Gingrich on Thursday said he and his wife plan to campaign through the fall to help presumptive nominee Mitt Romney.

"I'm going to look at how I can be helpful, because I suspect people will still show up to hear me," Gingrich told voters at luncheon here. "Callista and I are going to campaign through October."

Though today, just 25 people attended the midday event here, leaving a roomful of empty chairs. Some of those seats were taken by Secret Service, an area the campaign has taken heat for recently because of the thousands of dollars the protection was costing taxpayers, even Gingrich he had become more of a sideshow than serious contender for the GOP nomination.

After losing the Deleware primary on Tuesday, the latest in a long string of electoral defeats, the former Speaker of the House acknowledged he will end his campaign next week. He will continue with his packed schedule through North Carolina, saying he felt an obligation to fulfill previous commitments here.

"The campaign will go bye-bye, but I'll be a citizen," Gingrich told a supporter asking about the candidate's future. "I've been an active citizen since I was 15."....

I would still travel to hear Newt, once this year we went
400+ miles roundtrip to see and hear Newt. We’ve seen and heard him speak 3 times this year but I won’t cross the street to hear him tout Romney.

no Texas is in play based on recent polls and it doesn’t shock me one bit.

I knew if we nominated the freaking RINO yankee much of the South would be in play, and this latest map pretty much validates my original fears about Romney.

The entire bible belt is going to stay home and Obama is going to walk to an easy victory. So freaking sad. Romney was the ONLY one that could have lost this.

The entire bible belt is going to stay home and Obama is going to walk to an easy victory. So freaking sad. Romney was the ONLY one that could have lost this.

States like MS and TX are essentially "Yellow Dog Republican" states now; Satan himself could be the Republican nominee and he'd win these states.

I see only one organization that has done any Romney/Obama Texas polling, and that's PPP, and the margin is a steady 6-8% across 5 polls for over a year. That's not "in play." Considering how much polling gets savaged here, and PPP in particular, I don't know why these would be accepted anyway.

Neither are "in play," Romney and Obama won't bother campaigning in these states (other than fundraising) and they won't spend money on ads. Mississippi has been R for 8 Presidential elections, typically by about a 15-25% margin; only time this didn't happen was because of Ross Perot.

Of the many arguments against Romney, the idea that he'll lose the South in a general election is one of the poorest ones; it is essentially a fabricated argument based on the idea that the views of FR are similar to the Republican electorate as a whole, which they are not, even in the "Bible Belt."

Heck, I bet a lot of the people on FR who assert they will not vote will end up doing so, as the Obama attacks on Romney get more vicious as the election approaches, and they finally realize they can't stand to give Obama the satisfaction, or see happy Democrats walking around the next day (they'll never admit they did, though).

tomkat: I hope you have not misidentified me as a "usual suspect." I have zero confidence that Romney is grounded in Constitutional principles and would fight to undo ALL the damage that the Obama adm has done to our Republic. I have quite the opposite opinion about Newt.

Dearest onyx: I don't know if I am on tomkat's "some of the usual suspects," but please vouch to him that I am not a "usual suspect." My posting history may be too long for him to discover that for himself.

I would and will, happily vouch for you, but he knows you didn’t write “karmasabiatch” or the sarcastic words about Callista.

Thank you. :-). I only knew one of those keyworders who is an infamous “usual suspect.” I couldn’t figure out who he thought the “some” were.

I just thought the snarky ones were childish and unnecessary, regardless authorship.
In the grand scheme it's nothing, and I'm only a peon in here anyway, so don't lose any sleep over it.

If Onyx says you're ok, that's good enough for me.

lol

Out of curiosity did you think any of my keywords were snarky?
“newtgoodbyetour”; “newthelpsromney”; “newt”; “newtforromney”

I assure you they were not intended to be. I am probably one of the most prolific keyworders on FR. I do it because I do a lot of research, and it is the only way to find past articles/posts on FR.

This is a sad but significant day. The Romney machine is now unopposed, and it is important how Newt (and Palin and Santorum) decide to help Romney (or not) and what they do for the House & Senate races. Thus the keywords.

Like Onyx, I too am praying for divine intervention. Palin usually has impeccable judgment, so I hope she is right about Romney (post #15), but I do not share her optimism.

Romney is pulling as far left as he can right now without landing in Obama’s lap. And IF he is the Repub candidate, and IF he wins, I have serious doubts he has the requisite mindset to undo the damage. Although Romney has fought a vicious race, I imagine him as a “get along” business President who will try to get the economy moving. He’s still calling Obama a “nice guy.”

Top conservative leaders will need to hold his feet to the fire. IF Romney becomes Pres, I hope Newt will be the sharpest thorn in the GOPe’s side. Newt’s next steps now and after the election will be critical in saving our country. What will he do? is the big question.

Uh, not to be too obvious, when Bachmann, Sanctimonium, etc, quit, there were still conservatives remaining, whom they could have put their support behind, but never did. Newt was the Last Conservative Standing, who was he supposed to endorse, Paul?

Hate makes people blind. You are exhibit A.

Newt was the Last Conservative Standing.

LOL. No he wasn't. Newt hasn't been in this fight since GA. He didn't just "not win" states, but was losing to Paul in some of them. Beyond that, he wrapped up Tuesday night by having a guy who dropped out weeks ago get more votes collectively and actually beat him in PA. He also lost to Paul in 4 of the 5 contests. He beat him in DE. I thought he had DE all sewed up BTW?

Here is a map that show just how poorly he did county by county showing clearly that just because you didn't officially drop out, doesn't mean you are still in this.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Republican_Party_presidential_primaries_results_by_county,_2012.png

Last I checked, there are at least 4 other candidates still running including Paul, but no one is talking about them being still in this. BTW, on the topic of Paul. Are you now openly supporting him since he is now the last Conservative in?

Newt’s not going to be speaking about Romney...rather he will be speaking about Obamas failures and countering obamas lies....not a bad idea at all. Someone needs to expose Obama cause Romney certainly won’t. Newt has nothing to loose by doing this.

Oh yeah, I forgot to call you out on your BS charge about being angry hateful or whatever you are peddling today.

Sanctimonium

If there was anyone with a deep seeded hatred in the pit of your stomach, you would fit the bill. Why in the world are you still using childish slams on a man that is not in this race anymore. I know you are a child, but beyond that, you don't see me using any slurs towards Newt though there are a ton. Maybe you should reassess your life and how you communicate in posts. Judging by past comment you have made towards others not in the Newt camp, you have some issues to work on.

Well Newt certainly didn’t mention Romney at this stop...rather he focused on what needs to be done in Washington, on What American can be, and the policies its should have. And he bashed oBam of course. But nothing Romney directly at all.

I am afraid you know nothing of the South and the bible belt. God comes first, then country.

They wont vote for Obama ... but they will stay home before they vote for a Mormon, that’s just the way it is.

If Karl Rove says Texas is in play, it’s in play.

I agree, caww, Newt is thinking beyond Romney, and it’s a theme he continued later yesterday at a stop in Burlington, NC.

Yep,....he's having the say when few others will speak up or have the ability to do so. The American people need to hear Newt....it's likely the last time truth will be told accurately.
