Nine kids were injured when a school bus got tangled up in a four-vehicle crash on State Highway 123 near Foxtrotter Road on Friday morning.
(Seguin) -- Nine Seguin ISD students were injured in a multiple vehicle accident this morning on State Highway 123 near Foxtrotter Road.
State troopers say the crash involved the school bus, a gravel hauling 18-wheeler and two passenger vehicles. The accident produced a fire and severe damage to all of the vehicle.
SISD Public Information Officer Sean Hoffmann confirmed the injuries during an interview this morning on radio station KWED.
"There was indeed a Seguin ISD school bus involved in the accident. What we know right now is that two of our students were transported to a San Antonio hospital for treatment. We've got two more being treated here in Seguin, and with possibly more," said Hoffmann.
Hoffmann later confirmed that nine students in all were injured. The truck driver was also airlifted from the scene and taken to University Hospital in San Antonio.
According to reports, a PT Cruiser traveling southbound on SH 123 near the bridge at Foxtrotter Rd. It pparently moved over to the shoulder to let the gravel hauler pass. There's no real shoulder near that bridge, so the car was struck as the shoulder faded over into the guardrail at the bridge near the intersection. The car was trapped and hit the guardrail. That crash led to a chain reaction that included the school bus and another car that was traveling behind the bus.
State troopers had to shut down the highway for hours, while trying to clear the scene and investigate the crash. The accident occurred around 6:30 a.m. Friday (today) on SH 123 near Foxtrotter Road approximately two miles south of the city of Seguin.
GUADALUPE COUNTY — Fourteen people were taken to area hospitals following a firery wreck.
The collision happened around 6:30 a.m. on Friday on State Highway 123 South near Fox Trotter Lane.
The wreck included a school bus, an 18-wheeler, and two passenger cars.
According to a Seguin ISD spokespersons, nine of the transported were middle and high school children, as well as the bus driver.
Two to the students and the bus driver were transported to San Antonio Military Medical center with unknown injuries.
The driver of the tractor-trailer was taken by AirLife to University Hospital in San Antonio in critical condition, said a DPS spokesperson.
State Highway 123 South has been shut down at FM 477 and Zion Hill Road and is being diverted as Texas Department of Public Safety Troopers investigate the accident.

“We have zero fatalities,” Reyes said. “We were very blessed.”
Reyes said members of a Halliburton crew came upon the scene and helped people get out of the wrecked vehicles. They were “heroes,” Reyes said.
“Hoffman said the school bus — in service just three weeks — was specially designed to cushion the impact of a head-on collision, which may have helped save the students on board.”

That’s quite a fire! I thought most newer school buses these days were diesel. A diesel bus wouldn’t burn like that, would it?

School districts in Texas and New York have received propane school buses manufactured by Blue Bird Corp.
Seguin (Texas) Independent School District (ISD) has added 21 Propane-Powered Vision buses to its fleet. District officials made the decision after attending a Breathe Easy Propane School Bus workshop last year wherein Michael Williams, commissioner of the Texas Railroad Commission (TRC), discussed the benefits of the alternative fuel.
“I’m delighted that Seguin ISD has chosen to include propane as a fuel for its fleet of buses,” Williams said. “These 21 buses reduce the emissions that Seguin’s schoolchildren are exposed to, and they are a great value for the taxpayers through lower fuel and operating costs.”
Propane-powered buses qualify for federal alternative motor vehicle and alternative fuel tax credits. Additionally, because the district is located in Guadalupe County, the buses are eligible for state grants from the TRC’s Propane Equipment Initiative. The initiative is funded by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality’s Emission Reduction Plan fund that aims to reduce emissions in air quality non-attainment and near non-attainment counties.
“Seguin ISD is receiving $158,150 from the commission’s Propane Equipment Initiative,” Williams said. “And the Blue Bird distributor for this area, Rush Enterprises, is issuing Seguin a cash reimbursement of $7,000 per bus through the federal Alternative Motor Vehicle Tax Credit, which adds up to $147,000 for the 21 buses.”
Texas currently has 1,700 school buses that are fueled by propane, and it reportedly has 30 additional Propane-Powered Vision school buses on order, with more in the pipeline.
