Mr. Young was the point man for Mr. Edwards’s deception, going as far to falsely claim that he was the child’s father.

“I was not happy with it,” said Mrs. Young, 38, a pediatric nurse. “It was maddening to me. Andrew had no responsibilities at home,” she said. The couple have three children.

Mr. Young was devoted to Mr. Edwards and his family, making their household run smoothly and even assuring their cars were serviced, working dawn-to-dark hours for the freshman senator in Washington.

Eventually, Mrs. Young said, the tensions of life in Washington sent her back to North Carolina.

“I didn’t like the lifestyle,” said Mrs. Young. “After Sept. 11 hit, it scared me. I moved back to Raleigh.”

The forceful testimony at the end of the day was a shift from a week that was often bogged down in tedious breakdowns of e-mails, cellphone calls and the details of the transfer of more than $900,000 from a pair of wealthy Edwards supporters. The money was needed as the Youngs, their three children and Ms. Hunter went on all-expenses-paid trips to luxury homes in Aspen, Colo., and posh hotels in the West, eventually moving into a home in Santa Barbara, Calif., to wait out the 2008 presidential election cycle.

Seems to me like Andrew had something going on the side with Edwards.
