Are men stupid? How else can we explain the endless parade of otherwise successful individuals, who by all appearances seem intelligent and competent, and yet risk destroying their careers and their personal lives over the chance to have a sexual escapade?
John Edwards crashing from the heights of promise to infamy, from presidential candidate to defendant in a trial after a secret affair; Secret Service agents ending their careers in disgrace over dalliances with prostitutes in Colombia, all join that long procession of men who managed to self-destruct, pulling a pin on the grenade of their careers and perhaps their personal lives for the sake of a little fun.
The pageant of legacy-killing misjudgment includes a president, several might-have-been presidents, a few governors, a World Bank director, a former Dutch prime minister, an Israeli president and one of the top golfers of all time. And that is only a partial list.
How to explain it?
The question has baffled women, mostly, since biblical times.
Perhaps the Secret Service agents thought their behavior, if discovered, would raise no eyebrows. But the stupidity was in evidence when one of the agents, who had earlier "protected" Sarah Palin, posted on Facebook that he was "checking her out." Sounds like the claim of a 13-year-old boy. And the decision to post the comment displays the common sense of an 8-year-old.
But that level of maturity and judgment shines compared to the decision of, say President BillClinton, who risked his presidency to have an affair with Monica Lewinsky, and then lied about it repeatedly.
A brilliant man, everyone said about the president, but also one of only two presidents in American history impeached.
The Clinton experience almost numbed us to the epidemic scale of the problem. Over and over we hear stories that defy belief.

Part of a man’s energy and drive to succeed and gain wealth and power (whether through government or privately) comes from the same thing that powers his sex drive: testosterone.
Once in a lecture by Bart Kosko, the Fuzzy Logic guru, he mentioned that frequency-hopping spread spectrum communications had been co-invented by a movie actress. He challenged the audience to name her.

I think men are stupid when they are comfortable and secure.
Men are brilliant when they are challenged or in danger.
There are exceptions, but you know what I mean.
The “great motivator” is the key to civilization. Women don’t get it.
In other words low libido women lead dull boring lives. They will never know the thrill of the hunt.
Weren’t women involved as well? Or are these just homosexual encounters?
I understand your point. But it doesn’t quite explain why men, who are capable of rational thought, are willing to ruin their lives just to spread their “seed” around.

To some rich and powerful men being celibate and not "getting any" would make him feel like he was a failure. To them what was the point in amassing power?
The problem I have with this is the pretense of the wife and perfect family et al. Men that want the playboy lifestyle should ditch the wife, pay the money and go play. Sex is what keeps some (most) men from becoming really morose and melancholic. Even in a long term relationship a boredom factor can cause psychological issues. A women wouldn't understand. That is why there is a war between the sexes....
Women are stupid. I blame them for moderates and democrats.
To me, the premise makes no sense. My life has been successful from my point of view but it never encompassed any ambition to grow wealthy and powerful just so I could have sexual conquests. I just do not understand those men (and maybe a few women). Maybe my libido differs from that of other men.
This sentence from your post really got my attention: “Sex is what keeps some (most) men from becoming really morose and melancholic.” As suggested above, sex has never played that big a role in my life (especially now at age 71), so I will never understand that statement. Those men live in a different world than the one I inhabit.
And I can never see ruining my life just to have sex with someone that appeals to me. That is my definition of stupid.
I agree, though, that these vast differences, especially in degrees of libido, account for the war between the sexes.
Along time ago in another lifetime, when I was just a young Airman, an old Staff Sergeant gave me some very good advice. He said, “Every time a man thinks with the head of his **** all it does is get him into trouble.” Never seen that advice go wrong.

I think you left out a comma after NO, which is really important. Otherwise you just said that we are stupid.
(Actually, it's just an act. We can't figure out the washing machine or a sewing machine, because we are stupid. I am just glad you women are here, otherwise we'd be naked.)
The never mentioned fact is that if women didn't exist, there would be no wars.
