Fla. Task Force Wants Major Changes To “Stand Your Ground” Law

TALLAHASSEE (CBSMiami/AP) —Florida’s controversial “stand your ground” law should undergo major changes but not be repealed, according to an independent task force created in the wake of the Travyon Martin shooting.

State Sen. Chris Smith, who organized a panel of legal experts to look at the state’s “stand your ground” law, delivered recommendations to Gov. Rick Scott and legislative leaders on Monday.

"The Fort Lauderdale Democrat said he would sponsor a bill that includes the changes, including one that requires a grand jury to determine whether “stand your ground” can be used to avoid prosecution."

They will tweak the law just enough where on the surface it looks harmless enough but the minute the law is broken, there will be a federal investigation.

The stand your ground law worked perfectly with Zimmerman. If he had not shot Martin, Zimmerman would be dead. If Martin was still alive he should be prosecuted for attempted murder.

So, the DemocRAT from Broward County took it upon himself to convene a panel of legal experts (lawyers) because of a case that happened in Seminole County, based on??????? Zimmerman has not been proved guilty of anything and the only fact we know about the stand your ground law is since its inception, crime is down.

I hope Gov. Scott ash cans the panel's recommendations.

OK. Tweak it. But add a provision that says that the armed security (including police) for state officials and legislators cannot unholster their firearm until the protectee has been shot. That’s “shot” and not “attacked”. If someone wants to go at them with a baseball bat, then they have to run away or just take their beating. If its good enough for the citizenry, it should be good enough for our “leaders”.

Just another typical DemoCRAP gun grabber. He was also one of only 20 legislators who voted against it in the first place. Hopefully the Gov will tell him to go pound sand.

It doesn’t even bother them that if Zimmerman was pinned to the ground the Stand Your Ground law doesn’t apply. Self defense laws on the books before Stand Your Ground would have allowed him to shoot Martin.

The governor should send him a nice form letter, thanking him for his interest in the operation of the government of the state of Florida, and include a “Visit Florida” bumper sticker.

I think they the changes they want are:

• It is ok to shoot unless you shoot a black man in a hoodie
• You can stand your ground against an intruder, but not shoot
• If your skull is being crushed into the pavement you may only fire a warning shot into the ground
• No firearm may be discharged to prevent a assault or robbery unless you are already shot and hit.
• You may stand your ground, but your ground is in the cemetery
• If you choose to confront a suspected law breaker you may only hand out skittles and say dude wasup.
• Peeking in windows at night in the rain does not constitute suspicious behavior and any disagreement is clearly racist
• Before a citizen may discharge a fire arm they must call and get permission from the police unless the the person being shot at is black then they must get Al Sharpton's and Eric Holder's permission to shoot one of his people.
• You may not shoot if you are in fear of losing your life you may fire after you have lost your life.

I don’t see how “Stand your ground” applies here, unless someone is arguing that the law influenced Zimmerman’s thought processes that night. If his story is correct, he pulled his gun after being assaulted, and his self-defense rights are sufficient alone.
