NEWARK, NJ (CBS SF) — A New Jersey woman headed to San Francisco International Airport was briefly detained Tuesday after Transportation Security Administration screeners found explosive devices inside a suitcase she had checked for the flight, federal authorities told CBS San Francisco.

TSA explosives experts said the woman’s luggage contained three small Claymore land mine casings, two of which were “packed with shrapnel.” ..

...

TSA and local police confiscated the weapons, but allowed the woman – identified only as a resident of Union, New Jersey – to travel on a later flight to San Francisco.

Was she wearing a burkha? That would offer Janet’s minions a good excuse to let her go. We wouldn’t want to profile, don’t ya know?

The were for a conference. Probably didn’t have any boom boom in them.

Ya, I wondered that too. Why wasn’t she arrested???

This sends a giant welcome sign out for anyone up to no good, doesn’t it? If you get caught, they will let you go??? Where’s the risk of certain punishment and legal trouble, if you are simply allowed to get on a later flight?????

Now see, if you give your kid a homemade turkey sandwich to take to school it's a crime, but if you're a paid TSA flunky sent out to generate a headline in an attempt to justify the continued waste of taxpayer for these mall cop wannabees, well, you collect your check and go on your way.

The fact two had shrapnel should have warranted an arrest IMO.

There are lots of inert M-18 casings that have had the C-4 taken out and they used for training. The fragmentation part is molded or epoxied in and stays with the inert casing. The frags are little BB sized shot.

Scary looking, but harmless. They are used in the SMCT-1 task training for emplacing Claymore mines. Bringing them on board a flight would cause a predictable panicky response from TSA. Very dumb.

Was she wearing a burkha?

maybe a bikini? lol

had to be a licensed weapons courier to start with or maybe not, sounds like she had to forfeit the load tho this time, paperwork not filled out, no notification, maybe a test run?

I know very little about mines, but it appears these were only mine casings. While they probably contained some explosive residue, they were not “explosive devices” since they were incapable of exploding. The fact that two of them contained shrapnel, i.e. non-explosive ball bearings or whatever is used in the darn things, is irrelevant. A ball point pen is probably more dangerous than an inert mine, because a person could get accidentally jabbed by the pen. The TSA had no logical reason to confiscate the items. By doing so, they may have hampered development of technologies that actually aid our military.

Anyone else see it my way?

Idiotic to confiscate plastic containers, one of which contained ball bearings. An inert explosive device is not an explosive device.

Yeah, they arrest people for forgetting they have a hand gun in their bag, but they release a woman intentionally tying to bring mines on a plane?

I can only guess she packed them but asked if she was allowed to check bags with them in them before they found them? In that case she really did not try to check mines, but rather had them and inquired if should could check them. And maybe she is some kind of specialist who has a license for such weapons. That is the only explanation I could come up with?

I get a TSA hernia exam, and if I complain I get detained with promise of a later flight. WTF over.

I saw a demo once , impressive.

Nothing says good morning to Charlie like a claymore in his face.

TSA handled this as gracefully as it could considering, I can only imagine some of the stuff that does get thru.. and the dummies carrying it.
