NEWARK, NJ (CBS SF) — A New Jersey woman headed to San Francisco International Airport was briefly detained Tuesday after Transportation Security Administration screeners found explosive devices inside a suitcase she had checked for the flight, federal authorities told CBS San Francisco.

TSA explosives experts said the woman’s luggage contained three small Claymore land mine casings, two of which were “packed with shrapnel.” ..

...

TSA and local police confiscated the weapons, but allowed the woman – identified only as a resident of Union, New Jersey – to travel on a later flight to San Francisco.

Even if that account is not true......I can attest to similar. They wanted to take my knife that was issued. I told him in no uncertain terms what he could go do to himself.

Uncle Sam wants you to join the US Military in order to fight terrorists......so the TSA can treat you like one at home.

Shrapnel is not explosive. Shrapnel consists of small metal fragments. It is only marginally more dangerous than an equivalent weight of ball bearings.

Since she only had the casings the same would hold true for her.

None of the TSA examples matter here. As a wise man used say; you pack Claymores in your checked baggage.p

BTW, for those bastards monitoring us my laptop may be full of shrapnel but it is completely lacking any explosives.

I know because I got the random positive test last week and they tested everything in my bag to include my laptop.

Thank you for your service to the country and I am sorry for the way you were treated by the idiots at TSA.

The e-mail I posted was something I received in an e-mail. To be clear, I can not take credit for serving in the military as I did not. I was not personnally involved in the event described. I thank them every chance I get as well. So thank you on behalf of those that do serve in our armed forces (including the Coast Guard).

PS - I tried but the Naval Academy wouldn't have me. :o)

But wouldn’t a sane person check ahead of time; and let the airline know that you are wanting to transport a dangerous “looking” device?

Close your eyes and picture that conversation with a TSA agent....

"Hi. I want to make sure it is going to be ok that I have two inert claymore mines packed in my carry on luggage."

"You have who's mind packed in your luggage?"

"No. Mines! Like bombs. Explosives! Except these do not have any explosive charges loaded in them. So they are harmless, inert."

"Inert!!!! You have bombs in your luggage and you think they are harmless!!!! SIEZE THIS WOMAN! Call the bomb squad! Take her in the back room and strip search her for whatever she inerted!"

That scenario doesn't seem to work either. The situation was hopeless. She should have shipped the parts. She's dealing with the TSA here, not the Boyscouts. :o)

If I was running the x ray machine that found them; I would want her put in stocks in a public area.

you don’t pack Claymores in your checked baggage.

They weren't really claymores without the explosive material. You'd fit in well with the TSA folks.

“They weren't really claymores without the explosive material. You'd fit in well with the TSA folks. “

Don't be foolish. She what looked to be realistic looking (from the story) devices.
Did she not think her luggage would be scanned or opened?

So you think it be ok for someone to walk into a mall with realistic looking, but fake hand grenades; or a similar looking fake bomb vest?
Same thing.

Think for your self here; don't just react. Just because TSA does some things in a foolish way; doesn’t mean they should quit doing their job.
They actually did their job in this case.

I'll let you take the flights where people want to pack fake bombs in their luggage.

They should set up a separate security screening area for people that are transporting fake bombs in their carry on luggage.

"Maam, I'm sorry! This line is only for people with fake explosives in their carry on luggage or on their person. You'll have to go through the 'non-explosive-containing-carry-on' screening line."

Now that is a great idea. Just think of the corporate sponsors they could leverage. Law firms could set up kiosks to offer on the spot legal advice.

Thank you! If only you could actually do that! I used to fly without all of that pseudo security and I've lived to a ripe old age. Now you flinching young ones are afraid to fly with cardboard cutouts of guns!

The TSA should be capable of spotting stuff like that and then discriminating between something dangerous and something benign. But, no, they have to make everyone's life miserable just because they aren't savvy enough to tell the difference between a real threat and someone's demo units! It is reasonable and proper to assume that the TSA is also not capable of discriminating between something inert and an actual threat. I'm sure danger can be made to fit in a very inconspicuous package that doesn't match any of the the "monkey training". So, you have traded your Liberty for a FALSE sense of security ... AND you are damn proud of that.

I'm unimpressed by the current crop of Americans. They aren't worth the blood of our soldiers. They die for the Constitution; and, you willingly surrender it to PRETENSE of security.

I think she assumed that TSA screeners would be smarter than they actually turn out to be. Recall that those casings had something to do with her job. Perhaps she works for a company that contracts with DOD.

We are tagging loyal Americans just because we don't trust our own people any longer. This Nation cannot stand as a Republic if we don't trust the very people upon whose shoulders the government rests.

TSA screening is stupidly done.

Did she tell them this ahead of time? Has she done this before?
Those things I don't know.

But I do know if she just all of a sudden showed up with this in her luggage, she is an fool.

If time travel was possible; I would guess Sam Adams or any of his colleagues would be against people carrying fake looking explosives on airline flights.

If you had actually read what they wrote about Freedom and Liberty you would realize that your guess is way off the mark.
