Meet the First Obama Girlfriend

It only took nearly six years for the media to begin vetting President Obama’s past.

Today, Vanity Fair released an excerpt from a new biography of Barack Obama by David Maraniss. The excerpt discusses Barack Obama's first love affair, with a white Australian woman named Genevieve Cook. It's a telling examination of who Obama was as a young man -- and it shows a self-absorbed "internationalist" with delusions of grandeur.

The book itself sounds like an ode to Obama. Maraniss writes, “At age 20, Obama was a man of the world … He could not be of one place, rooted and provincial.” No, says Maraniss, this was a broadminded young man who “knew the ways of different cultures better than he knew himself.”

When he first moved to New York, he was in the midst of an affair with Alexandra McNear, a girl from Occidental. They exchanged a series of purple letters with one another – turgid missives from overfevered young minds. Here, for example, is tendentious Obama explaining poetry to his young girlfriend:

I haven’t read “The Waste Land” for a year, and I never did bother to check all the footnotes. But I will hazard these statements—Eliot contains the same ecstatic vision which runs from Münzer to Yeats. However, he retains a grounding in the social reality/order of his time. Facing what he perceives as a choice between ecstatic chaos and lifeless mechanistic order, he accedes to maintaining a separation of asexual purity and brutal sexual reality. And he wears a stoical face before this. Read his essay on Tradition and the Individual Talent, as well as Four Quartets,

Ha! Yeah, it’s the “big-azz head” version of the “big lie” — if you Photoshop it enough times, people will start to believe it.

I agree with your daughter. The photo looks photoshopped.

Look a the light source on Obama’s head. Like you said, behind his ear. The light source for the girl appears to be coming from up above. Look at the shine on the top of her head. The shadows on her face appear to go downward.

Look at their hands and the cups. Obama’s hand looks unnatural, like a claw. He is holding the cup in a weird way. And his hand is white.

Look at the shadow Obama’s cop makes on her sweater. It doesn't look right and it is not consistent with the light source on her head and face.

Of course, I was referring to the cropped photo -- in which it appears that the camera elevation is about a foot above Obama's head (I assumed the ground sloped up a bit.) That would be enough to create considerable foreshortening of the body. You can see this effect in most snapshots. The best way to avoid distortion by foreshortening, when photographing a standing person, is to hold the camera at about the level of the subject's waist.

Then along came JennysCool and post #103. That uncropped (less cropped) photo indicates that the camera was further back -- thus the foreshortening effect would have been less.

In summary:

Obama or Fauxbama

The jury's still out.

The shadow of the cup Obama is holding shows the angle of the light source. Given that, the shadows on his face and that of the girl is wrong.

Not only that, it isn’t anywhere that TinEye can find it (same goes with the cropped version).

I should have made myself much clearer.

What I meant to say is that it's not anywhere else. I.e. no matches, except for the pic at the site the photo posted on FR was taken from.

If this story has "legs" (and not just a fat head, ha ha); there should soon be lots of other sites with the photo.
