I wouldn't say that his own epitaph is characteristic - especially looking back at a chaotic life dabbling in the occult.

Look at the rest of the late poem from which it comes, and you'll see what I mean.

His poems are memorable, so many lines come unbidden to mind:

"While on the shop and street I gazed
My body of a sudden blazed;
And twenty minutes more or less
It seemed, so great my happiness,
That I was blessed and could bless
