Obama did the same thing when he lied and called himself black based on 1/8 of his ancestry. Even two years ago, rather than identifying as mixed race for the Census, he lied to make “friends” with the racist liberal leaders who might help him stay in our White House.
I talked about this story with my English fundamentals class. Every student in the class is a Native American.
Here’s the central question, as stated in the clear-minded innocence of a 14-year-old: “Why is she ashamed of the 31/32ths of her heritage?”
We had an interesting discussion of white guilt. By the way, the Native kids have all had experience with people claiming that Nativeness is cool and something to be envied. One kid called it “really nice racism.”
I am blessed with good students.

She wouldn’t have had to be so pathetic had there only been a Facebook in 1996. It’s sad what digital deprivation used to do to people.
Now she leads a happy, fulfilling life, full of friends.
