No, that hasn’t been the case since at least the 60’s. Several subs were named for congressmen back then.

Frankly I would support a law prohibiting naming any naval vessel or any other US government facility after an elected official until 50 years after their death. The only exceptions would be presidential libraries and national park facilities directly related to a president.

Next up will be the USS Whitney Houston.

A new class of vessel called the Self-Destroyer.

Working for the big CA Growers for many years, my F-I-L had to deal with Chavez on many occasions.

He told me that Chavez was a real SOB and they hated each others guts. Considering my F-I-L is a very nice, polite and even tempered individual, it must have taken a whole bunch of s*** coming for Chavez to get him so riled up.

My F-I-L is in his 80’s now and he still despises the SOB.
Being a Navy man, he will split a gut when I tell him about the USS Caeser Chavez.

Can sailors refuse to serve on a particular ship?

I imagine that sailors serving on this ship are going to be ridiculed by regular Navy sailors.

The first Captain of the (potential) USS Harvey Milk should have the patriotism and guts to scuttle the ship at the earliest possible moment. His career will be terminated but he will be the hero of the rest of the Navy.

Maybe the sailors will all go strike—in the spirit of Cesar Chavez.

My gawd! The Navy really named a ship for this commie scum?? No wonder people are hoarding canned beans and ammo.

lol. Yeah right. They cannot refuse to serve on a particular ship. The only possibility they have is if given a choice between two ships, they can pick the other but often they are sent orders to go to their next orders especially junior Sailors.
