I'm against putting first term office holders in the VP slot. All it does is to thin out the ranks of rising stars. Sure in 1952 Nixon was just in his second year of his first term as senator, but he had already achieved national notoriety in two terms as a congressman immediately before that. Palin was only in her second year as governor when McCain tapped her to be his running mate. Had she not been the VP nominee on a ticket that most likely was going to go down in flames, she would still be Governor of Alaska and would have made a name for herself based on achievements in that office. Due to the level of scrutiny the press refused to apply to Obama, she had to resign her office to be able to afford her legal fees fighting off bogus charges.
Also, it usually makes for a really poor electoral strategy to have two candidates from the same region much less neighboring states on the ticket.
