Lugar makes last ditch appeal to save Senate career

INDIANAPOLIS (Reuters) - Senator Richard Lugar appealed to Democrats to cross party lines and vote for him in the Indiana Republican primary on Tuesday, in a last ditch effort to save his 35-year Senate career from a Tea Party backed rival who accuses him of being too supportive of President Barack Obama.

"I've asked very candidly for support from all Hoosiers. Not just Republicans, but Democrats and independents. I'm asking for the Republican Party to expand," Lugar said at his campaign headquarters in Indianapolis on Tuesday, where two dozen volunteers rang a bell each time a voter pledged to vote for the senator.

The defeat of Lugar, one of the most prominent voices on foreign policy in Congress, would be the first loss by a Senate incumbent in the 2012 elections and would mark a major victory for the Tea Party movement to reduce the size of the federal government.

What is it about these old-guard politicians that make them retire so ungracefully. Lugar has been in the Senate since 1977. Retire with dignity, not with the democrats!

I think it's the water in Washington DC. It shrinks the brain and reduces the IQ until they all become leftists.

Anyone know if Lugar could pull a Lieberman and run as an independent if he loses the primary?

Just read the answer to my question, i.e., sore loser law.

Surely you can’t be serious.

No but I can.

Morris said Lugar plans to throw the country overboard with the ratification of the Law of the Sea Treaty (a truly evil end for the USA).

Lugar's attitude and actions are why I generally don't vote for the GOP any more.

I will vote for a real conservative with an R by their name, but it's been long years since I voted GOP all the way down the ticket.

"Perchance he for whom this bell tolls may be so ill, as that he knows not it tolls for him; and perchance I may think myself so much better than I am, as that they who are about me, and see my state, may have caused it to toll for me, and I know not that."

Thanks for the info.

One thing is for sure, he won't be giving even token support to his opponent.

So Lugar joins the ranks of shame with Crist, Scozafava, Castle, and Specter.

Words can not express the contempt these people are worthy of....

I don’t think he can run third party/independent. I believe Indiana has a “Sore Loser” law in place.

Old guard heck. My former RINO congressman was in office for one term and has spent the last 6 years running for the seat as a write in candidate, supporting the democrat candidate, supporting the RINO candidate, and now considering running as a democrat. (Joe Schwarz)

In Lugar’s case, wouldn’t it be an addition by subtraction?

I think the vast majority of them are sociopaths. Even in the republican party

You're saying that about Lugar? It would really help if you had some evidence -- something "sociopathic" that he'd done in 36 years in Washington. Otherwise, why go there?

Yeah I’m not a fan of straight ticket voting despite the fact that my votes go almost exclusively to republicans in the state and national races.

Here is the Democrat like commercial Lugar has run in Indiana:
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/21134540/vp/47340279#47340279

Not sure if you can skip the ad before the commercial but the Lugar ad is right out of the Democrat playbook.
