North Carolina's religious base slows rate of same-sex marriage approval
The Guardian ^ | Tuesday 8 May 2012 | Harry J Enten

North Carolina voters will likely vote in favour of a constitutional ban against gay marriage and civil unions, with all the indications that it will pass with a margin of about 3:2 on Tuesday. The result – which would represent a huge blow for many civil rights activists – has long been predicted, and fits with the slow march towards full equality for same-sex marriage.

The reason for such strong confidence in the passage of North Carolina's Amendment 1 is that 76% of people in North Carolina consider religion to be an "important part" of their daily lives, the eighth highest state in the nation.

The higher percentage of religious voters in the state has equalled greater support for same-sex marriage bans.

Still, there has been a rapid rise in support of same-sex marriage nationwide that is unlike the more gradual increase seen at the time of a previous same-sex ballot ban initiative in 2009. Now a plurality of American adults believe same-sex couples should be allowed to marry vs no legal recognition. Only four years ago, the same polls found that same-sex marriage opponents outnumbered supporters by 10 to 20 percentage points.

What would happen if this accelerated pace also occurred in North Carolina?

In fact, a majority, 56% of North Carolina adults – up from 51% just three years ago – do oppose a constitutional ban on same-sex marriage. The problem for gay marriage supporters is that elections are only among those who turn out to vote.

And the rapid growth of support for same-sex marriage among all North Carolinians has not translated to the narrower likely voter population. About 57% of North Carolinians expected to vote today oppose same-sex marriage vs no legal recognition, a mirror image of the adult population.

Adjust for the margin of fraud, and the amendment wins in the 70’s.

The Dems are so toast in NC. The famous IowaHawk adds a bit of humor :)

These were posted after NC voted for a constituted amendment barring same-sex marriage....

David Burge @iowahawkblog

I demand President Obama pull the DNC from Charlotte, publicly condemn NC for its bigotry, and refer it to a war crimes tribunal. NOH8!

David Burge ‏ @iowahawkblog Let's face it: if the DNC holds their convention in NC now, it's tantamount to embracing Pol Pot on a mountain of skulls. NOH8!

Whatever happened to the supposed ideal of simply tolerating
“alternative lifestyles”?

We the people have always been able to tolerate people who we don't actively approve.

What is not going to happen, is forcing people to approve of the alternative lifestyles we as a society merely tolerate.

Backlash is a bitch!

They should have put it on the November ballot.

"Twenty-eight states have constitutional amendments that ban gay marriage; another ten ban it by statute. Until today, North Carolina was the only state in the South did not have a constitutional ban. Republicans took over the state legislature in 2010 after 140 years of Democratic rule, setting the stage for the ban."

Let's see, when 38 states ban gay marriage, they are the odd man out?

“Adjust for the margin of fraud, and the amendment wins in the 70’s”

Even if the pros are in the 70’s, it’s still too close.

I love it when I go to church with friends in North Carolina. Absolutely no whimpering about “inclusion” or “Mother God” or any other heresy.

They should have put it on the November ballot.

They tried, but the Demo-homos screamed foul. They knew that high turnout in the general election would ensure the amendment's passage, since blacks especially vote for traditional marriage.

This was a concession to the screaming homos in the legislature to get it passed on to the voters.

"North Carolina's religious base slows rate of same-sex marriage approval"

North Carolina slowed the rate of same-sex marriage approval by U.S. voters from 0.00% voter approved in 28 states by a slight 0.00% decrease to 0.00% of the time in 29 states.

Libs like to claim it is only “religious” people who are against redefining marriage and family. I know that all atheists are not thinking it is a great idea for the government to socially engineer marriage and family around the homos’ rear ends.

It makes no sense to do that from an economic, psychological and social point of view for society. Families and marriage are very important to economic and social stability and to the mental health of children.

That flaming hater Savage is raging about now.
