Yes, it was. East Moriches, NY (Long Island). I had a couple of business friends who were outside, not more than 15 miles away that evening, and saw it happen. But the FBI field interviews went nowhere, after all the paperwork, pics, sketches etc were “classified”, er *sanitized*.
Yes the TWA aircraft was shot down. Media tried to spin it as static electricity in fuel tank or some such nonsense. I do believe it proved to be the beginning of the end for TWA - my first employer and a once great airline.
