Not bad for a 64 year old in a high stress situation with a .45 Auto. Those 1911’s are hard to master anyway if that’s what it was.

They would probably both be dead now if he hadn’t acted.

The trick to the .45 Auto is to manhandle it and don't be dainty. Use both hands and keep both eyes open and empty the mag on target. It'll get 'er done. Just remember it is not a finesse weapon.

I was going to say the same thing. My father used to say that the only way to hit the side of a barn with one of those was if you were standing inside the barn. But then he shot with one hand, arm extended.
