A super PAC supporting Texas Lt. Governor David Dewhurst's Senate campaign has released an internal poll showing him at 57 percent in the GOP race with less than three weeks left until the primary.
The poll shows Dewhurst at 57 percent, followed by Ted Cruz at 16 percent, Tom Leppert at 12 percent, and Craig James at 4 percent. Eleven percent were undecided.
If Dewhurst finishes with over 50 percent of the vote on May 29, he wins the nomination outright. If not, the top two finishers will advance to a July 31 runoff.
The Perception Insight poll of 800 Texas Republican primary voters was conducted for the Texas Conservatives Fund from May 1-7 and carries a margin of error of +/- 3.5 percentage points.

Is Craig James the Texas A&M Craig James?
Part of it is name recognition. I have gotten several packets in the mail, and several phone calls.
Or, was it SMU?
Dewhurst is playing nasty politics.
The more he does it, the more I dig in for Cruz.
Truth is, Cruz is breathing down Dewhurst’s neck.
SMU , he couldn’t get elected dog catcher in Texas , IMHO .
It was SMU - the best pro football team in Texas at that time. Craig James swears he wasn’t paid and didn’t know anyone else was paid either. He is also the father of Adam James - thee weasel that got Mike Leach fired at Texas Tech. Over the last 35 years, Craig James has managed to piss off most of the State of texas. He couldn’t be elected dog catcher in Muleshoe!....red
Bump! I'll vote for Cruz.
Yeah, I wasn’t sure if it was A&M or SMU. But, then I remembered he played with Eric Dickerson, so it had to have been SMU.
Poll was taken May 1-7. Sarah endorsed Cruz on May 10th.
I wonder if he can even get his job back at ESPN ? He no longer has exclusive acsess to coaches and players for interviews like he did before the Mike Leach ordeal . Did you read “ Swing Your Sword “ ? Craig can rot in his own stew .
Guess I need to chill :-)
He couldnt get elected in Lubbock either, his son apparently got stuck in storage, lol :) Red Raiders do not forget that.
I really shouldn’t get started ranting about CJ . Leach will do well at Washington , we wish him well . Oh , and we are Cornhuskers !
What I don’t get is Leppert and James. They’re both liberals.
Two votes for Cruz in this very Conservative Household.
I’ll see your bump, and double it!
I’m for Cruz all the way.
SMU.......that’s who we’re voting for.
Polling 800 GOP Primary voters in TX is NO SAMPLE.
I have the fire in the belly again this year.
Will be in Ft. Worth as a delegate for the TX GOP Convention. Has been a number of years since I was involved. Wife is an alternate.
TX is going to put some real pressure on the National GOP. We don’t like what they have forced on us.
Would love to be a delegate to the national convention, but that is a very long shot.
You shouldn’t pay any attention whatever to these types of polls as they are DESIGNED to influence your opinions not measure them!
I can guarantee anyone the EXACT result they want for a poll before I write the first question or make even one phone call. It is a fairly exact science.
I’m always happy to know that a freeper will be a delegate to this convention-—that’s one fewer RINOs who will be there—LOL!
What’s going on is that Texas conservatives are educated and know that Lt. Governor Dewhurst is and always has been a conservative.
This is not Mourdock against Lugar.
Sure glad I'm not anywhere close to you so the lightening won't get me as well!
David Dewhurst is the Senate version of Joe Strauss! Nothing more or less than that!
No one has polled my household; we are voting Cruz and I am encouraging my extended family to vote Cruz
David Dewhurst is the Senate version of Joe Strauss! Nothing more or less than that!”
Amen to the statement about Dewhurst. And B.S. to the poll results. Everyone in our family and most people I know are voting for Cruz. We finally have a chance to have at least one Conservative Senator and it sure isn’t Austinite Dewhurst.
Me too. I’m voting for Cruz.
First signed up for FR during the TX GOP Convention when Rick Perry ran for Governor on his own. FR had a booth there. I had previously discovered FR from a link on Drudge.
Never was able to login, but lurked for years. Finally re-registered and became a part of the activity.
Still have the brochure they handed out at the booth. Plan to send it back to JR with a check soon. Wonder if anyone will remember the handout brochure?

Man, what gives with you? I’ve seen some of your other posts essentially implying that Liz Cheney is not a true conservative (in another thread discussing the possibility of her later running for Senate from Wyoming) and in this thread you’ve been implying that Cruz is not THE TRUE CONSERVATIVE in the Texas race. Things that make you go hmmm!
Same here.
Don’t beleve this lopsided poll.
Cruz has a nifty anti-slime ad against Dewhurst’s Mitt type slime ad about some unnamed US and Chinese business deal
With Cruz picking up endorsements from Palins and I think I heard Perry too, not even mentioning Tea Party, he’s hot.
Two more conservative votes for Cruz from our household as well.
Have you considered moving to California? You might like it there.
What the heck is going on in Texas is the GOP had a presidential primary but we weren’t invited. So only the diehard political junkies are even halfway paying attention to the primary races for the other offices. I am doggedly sifting through the websites of all these down-ballot judges & school board hopefuls & so forth to try to figure out who to vote for but most people I know are not taking the time to do any research. If anything, they may go by those voter guides that come in the mail but I don’t trust those.
When I was at Texas in the 80s there were bumper stickers that said: SMU: the best athletes money can buy.
I’m voting for Ted Cruz, and was even before the Palins endorsed him. Dewhurst probably would be considered conservative in most of the rest of the country, but this is Texas, we can do better.
Dewhurst is NOT the conservative in the race.
Dewhurst is buying this election, but has no real base of support among activists. He’s been a status-quo leader in Texas lege and has punted more than he’s delivered.
We can do better. TED CRUZ.
Here’s who has endorsed Ted Cruz: SARAH PALIN, the Tea Party Express, U.S. Sen. Jim DeMint and Rand Paul, Dr. James Dobson, Cathie Adams, George P. Bush, Gun Owners of America, Family Research Council Action PAC, FreedomWorks, Texas Home School Coalition PAC, Kelly Shackelford, David Barton, Peggy Venable and Young Conservatives of Texas... and a lot more. Ted Xruz has won straw poll after straw poll.
Texas are behind TED CRUZ for good reason. He is a smart, articulate, expounder of conservative principles who will represent conservatives well.
This is Rubio vs Crist type race. Say no to Dew-Crist.
Bogus poll.
Other polls show Cruz and Dewhurst will end up in a runoff.
Vote for Cruz.
Are you skeptical or could this poll be accurate?
You don’t know me well at all do you? You think that because we’re not voting for Dewhurst or Cruz and going with someone else makes us “Kalifornia” material? How did you reach that conclusion?
I have no idea of its validity.
I do know that his, DewCrist, attack ads run almost non-stop and the ads from Ted Cruz don’t seem as effective or are there as many of them.
Here in our household in Marxville by the Colorado (aka Austin, TX), there are two votes for Cruz. However, I wouldn’t bet anything I cared to lose on Cruz. I’ve seen lots of Dewhurst ads on TV, but have not seen even one Cruz ad. Maybe Cruz has written off the Austin area, but I hope not since much of the surrounding area contains lots of Republican voters.
This is another Dewhurst lie.
Actual non-internal polling shows Cruz has been slowly but steadily closing the gap on Dewhurst.
In September, it was Dewhurst 41, Cruz 12
In January, it was Dewhurst 36, Cruz 18
In April, it was Dewhurst 38, Cruz 26
Cruz has cut Dewhurst’s 29-point lead (Sept.) to 18 (Jan.) and then 12 (Apr.)

I haven’t read “Swing Your Sword”. I did read “The Double T Double Cross”. I was spitting mad when I read that one - had to put it down and come back to finish. Its no wonder the TT Board of Regents was screaming “soveriegn immunity” -they ought to fire the whole bunch of ‘em...red
It’s not who you are not voting for that defines you, but rather who you ARE voting for. Defense of the SMU professional football program, and its beneficiaries, indicates a lack of moral character, and an ethos that would probably be more at home in California than in Texas.
And I think that Mr. Nek has overstated Mr. Craig’s denial on accepting money. I’ve seen where he denied taking a signing bonus to go to SMU, but the quotes I’ve seen don’t deny that he took money while he was a player there. He has also denied that he got any money from the school administration.
If there is a statement from James that doesn’t have to be carefully parsed, I’ll be happy to review it. Until then, I’ll consider him a politician with an typical level of integrity, and not someone I’d trust in the Senate.
“David Dewhurst is the Senate version of Joe Strauss! Nothing more or less than that!”
That is simply not true. Dewhurst is far more conservative than Strauss. If you would actually go to your local elected Republican Party officials and ask them if Lt. Gov Dewhurst is more conservative than Speaker Strauss, they would tell you that Dewhurst is far more conservative than Strauss.
LOL!
I am one of my “local elected Republican Party officials” and I know better!
You say - “Ive seen some of your other posts essentially implying that Liz Cheney is not a true conservative (in another thread discussing the possibility of her later running for Senate from Wyoming)”
Not true. The point I made in that thread was was that the State of Wyoming needs true conservative new blood representing the interests of the State of Wyoming far more than they need the University of Chicago-educated lawyer- daughter of a career Washington insider reprensing them at this particular time in American history. You just made up the implication you stated in your post.
” and in this thread youve been implying that Cruz is not THE TRUE CONSERVATIVE in the Texas race.”
You again draw an implication not made by me in my posts, while I’m explaining to people less experienced in Texas than I, that the voters of the State of Texas actually have elected conservatives to office prior to 2010 and Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst is one of them.
I hope Cruz can get himself elected to a political office that is appropriate to his age and experience so that the conservative voters of Texas have a chance to see what he’s got.
Call it what you may. I’ve walked the Republican line for years and I’m not ashamed at all for that. Call it a protest vote I don’t care. At this moment in time I’m fed up with ALL politicians. Stay tuned......I’ve tried to be open-minded and I certainly am not so stubborn that I might not change my mind at some point. I’m still reading and trying to come to a conclusion as to what I might do. So sue me...:)
Just a tad full of yourself there aren't you nOOB?
I've been in the trenches of Republican Party politics in Texas since before you were born son and everyone who is anyone in this state knows me by my first name which, BTW, you will find on the list of Cruz endorsements!
SMU
Of course. I admire all those endorsers you name for presenting a united front in endorsing a slate of tea-party claimants who are running in the primaries. And the people you cite would be the first to tell you that they are going to win some and lose some depending on the local candidates and their records that they are running against.
Ted Cruz with his resume give the tea-party movement a lot of legitimacy on the legal side of issues, and for that reason alone, getting him elected is desireable for the tea-party movement.
But, it will not create a problem at all if Lt. Gov. Dewhurst wins the primary, like it would have if Sen. Lugar had won against Mourdock, or if Charlie Crist had beaten Rubio.
The tea party people can and should get fully behind Lt. Governor David Dewhurst if he wins the primary, unlike with the other totally different men listed above.
David Dewhurst is no Dick Lugar, nor is he a Charlie Crist.
Ive seen lots of Dewhurst ads on TV, but have not seen even one Cruz ad.
Don’t know the finances of Cruz but as you know Texas has some very expensive media markets so it may not be possible for him to do TV in those areas: Austin, DFW, Houston, etc.
“I’ve been in the trenches of Republican Party politics in Texas since before you were born son and everyone who is anyone in this state knows me by my first name which, BTW, you will find on the list of Cruz endorsements!”
I am glad to hear it!
So, what’s your problem with getting specific as to why you keep accusing Lt. Governor Dewhurst of not being conservative? You are the one who said said that Lt. Governor Dewhurst is as liberal as Speaker Joe Strauss.
Every post on this thread including yours is long on name-calling and short on explaining their accusations.
Out with it!
