Some in the church believe that government programs = Biblical compassion or charity. This is why Catholics were (are?) so involved in ‘social justice’.

I’ve never understood how one could reconcile socialism with “The one who is unwilling to work shall not eat.” or “If anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for his immediate family, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.”

I’ve had this discussion with Catholic leaders and they reference the Good Samaritan story. But the Samaritan gave from compassion - not compulsion, so I still don’t get it.

No where in my Bible does it tell me I can expropriate my neighbor’s funds to ‘do good’.

That being said, I think God is still more interested in our spiritual condition than our financial state, and I know Christ expects you to follow Him even in an oppressive regime.
