FW de Klerk: not all aspects of apartheid 'morally repugnant'
The Telegraph ^ | 11 May 2012 | Aislinn Laing

Nelson Mandela and F.W. de Klerk hold their hands high as they address a huge crowd of people in front of the Union Building after the first presidential inauguration in 1994

The Nobel Peace Prize winner said not all aspects of apartheid were "morally repugnant", and that there was "merit" in the notion of ethnic groups living apart but that in South Africa, the experiment had not worked.

In a CNN interview, Mr de Klerk said he had made a "profound apology" about the injustices wrought by apartheid on many occasions.

"What I haven't apologised for is the original concept of seeking to bring justice to all South Africans through the concept of nation states (essentially creating two separate states, one black and one white)," he said.

The introduction of separate homelands began in the 1950s and saw black South Africans, who made up about 80 per cent of the population, moved into "bantustans" accounting for around 13 per cent of the country's land, while whites held on to the remaining portion.

Many people were uprooted from their homes to be moved into impoverished homelands but, because of the lack of work there, had to apply for permits to live and work in white areas.

He’s right. We should declare the west coast states to be the left wing homeland, and purify the real America. They can have NYC, northern NJ, and Philadelphia just to show we don’t have any hard feelings.

When you make a nice table, everyone wants to sit at it.

“When you make a nice table, everyone wants to sit at it.”

Especially, when you kick people off their land and from their homes and relegate them to some strange “homeland,” they have a tendency to want to return to that table where they once owned homes, but were forcibly removed.

Unless, after the event in history, you make them a nice table.

Which is what Mr de Klerk says he failed to do.

This is like why the so-called Palestinian refugees are kept in poor overcrowded camps.

Ethnic cleansing and genocide is an “experiment?”

Jimmy Carter seems to be okay with some aspects of apartheid in Saudi Arabia against non-muslims. Then again, his Saudi masters pay him to be a good boy.

Afrikaners did really mess up. They had an opportunity to incorporate Blacks into their country in the mid 20th Century but instead they implemented Apartheid which meant that the country was inevitably heading to a sewer.

Rhodesia supposedly tried to do that. They got Mugabe instead.

Unlike the United States great success in fully integrating all races into the mainstream of American life.

What homes? The ancestors of most of the blacks now in South Africa came from further north, seeking jobs in white-developed areas. As for the "table" (built-up areas, working modern farms, factories, etc), it was built by the white colonists. Once it was built, you had people coming in and desiring to sit at the table.

In retrospect, I think many South Africans may be thinking the colonization of North America was the better model.

American Indians died out because they had no immunity to European Diseases. Not so with Africans.

In the early stages, yes. After a few generations, though, the only ones left were the ones with some degree of immunity. Those were mostly eliminated through conventional means: driving them away from their food supplies so that they died from malnutrition and starvation, or just getting shot.

Well, there is the little issue that they did the same things to people there before them, so I wouldn’t get too cross.

No offense, but the Blacks in SA are doing so well now (/sarcasm).

I have always thought the Afrikaaners should have created a method of limiting the franchise that didn’t exclude blacks but kept most of them from voting - say, literacy and knowledge of their charter, constitution, whatever, and applied it evenly to blacks, coloreds and whites.

Hell, we should use that one here.

Failing that, they should have co-opted one group of blacks (like the Zulus), given them the franchise, and used them to keep the rest of the blacks in check.
