The degree of difficulty of being a stay-at-home parent is evident in a new Gallup analysis of more than 60,000 U.S. women interviewed in 2012. Non-employed women with young children at home are more likely than women with young children at home who are employed for pay to report experiencing sadness and anger a lot of the day "yesterday." Stay-at-home moms are also much more likely to report having ever been diagnosed with depression than employed moms. Employed moms are about as emotionally well-off as working women who do not have children at home.

The “Depression” is the result of seeing their swinging hot populairty and party lifestyles evolve into a morass of bloated belly dependency and a phone that never rings.
This stay at home hubby (retired) learned a few new skills to fight depression - Gardening and Homebrewing. Saved!
It’s anecdotal but my wife just started working again after being home for 10-11 years and she is markedly happier but there are a lot of reasons for it I don’t want to go into.
If it works for you and your family (and no one else pays the bill) go for it.
Personally, I tried it a few months a quickly went back to the office.
Well, you do realize that you aren’t really an American woman unless you are out in the work force?
Women today are told since they were young girls that they are useless unless they get equal pay and equal success of men. It makes sense that they feel bad when they are at-home moms.
That swings both ways.
My 2 youngest go to private Christain school. I’m made to feel less then a proper parent by the stay-at-home moms who practically live at the school.
They wear their “homemaking” status like a badge....funny thing is, my kids come to school with clean, ironed uniforms, a fully nutritional packed lunch, and completed homework. Some of the kids of the spiritually correct moms are wrinkled, unbrushed and have a poorly packed lunch and “forgotten” homework. And, I’ve been to some of their houses....homemaker??? Really??? When you have to walk a path in the main foyer for all the junk stacked everywhere, your guests (other kids) have to sleep in the basement on the floor because your kids rooms are a such a mess, and dishes are several days old in the sink...well, I just have to wonder what exactly it is that you are “making” at home....
Of course they are going to be depressed as long as we have a Kenyan president ravishing the worth of stay at home moms on almost a daily basis.
I left out the part that I’m fine and dandy when they want an extra donation for the school. Then my paycheck is quite convenient.
That’s funny....my mom took a 2 hour nap every afternoon and always fealt great!
They are also being told that unless they have at least one abortion in their lifetime that they are not really a women. That is how bad the feminazis have screwed up life for both men and women. JMHO

We train our citizens to strive for a win in the disability lawsuit by encouraging them to all develop “conditions” like depression, attention deficit syndrome, post traumatic stress syndrome or any number of other “conditions” which can score them a lifetime of disability checks on top of all the other freebies they get already.

I think they are referring to unmarried stay at home moms.
The Moms that I know that drink, take anxiety medication, and live in a constant “pissed” off state are the Moms who work full time and have young children. Many have told me they feel “torn” between being a good Mom and providing a paycheck. I don’t believe this study. I think it is another “slam” at stay at home Moms IMHO. We get enough “slams”... we sit on the couch all day, eat bon bons, spend our day at the club... anything to diminish the fact that we sacrifice a great deal of financial status in order to raise our children correctly. Sorry Freepers... just tired of the slams.

I live in the People’s Republic of MD, and I have 2 daughters, one 20, one 27. Never once heard anything like that.
I’d love to see you document your assertion, uttered by someone with some degree of influence (not your crazy, meth addicted sister in law) in some recognizable publication.
The only time that she gets "sad or angry" is when she gets harangued by the media, her liberal friends, and militant feminists (including my Mother in Law) about her "stupid decision" to stay home with the kids.

What a bunch of Bull...my wife loves being a stay at home (but she doesn't stay home) mom (kids are busy... they are visiting the MUMMIES at the local museum today.)
There’s actually a difference between ‘housekeeping’ and ‘home making.’ Anyone can be or pay a housekeeper. Making a ‘home’ is a whole other story. Housekeeping has its instant reward, home-making not so much. Home-making can be achieved under either set of circumstances, it’s just more of a challenge for women who hold down a paying job. I wouldn’t be so quick to judge the appearance of one’s home any more than I think one’s choice to hold a salaried job should be judged by those who’ve made another decision (or vice versa).
