Sad to see my country in decline and giving itself over to the barbarians no different than did Rome.

For 6 years, I have been saying that the Danube has been breeched, Hadrianople awaits. I was wrong. We will have no defense.

What this nation really really needs is total bankruptcy and a great depression. It needs trial, hardship, impoverishment of the real kind that strips them of everything except their ability to work to eke out their own living.

Only then will people ask themselves, “What is truly valuable, truly lasting?”

And then we’ll reconsider the value of the spiritual, and rediscover the True Spirit who reigns above, the one who is the Way, the Truth, and the Life.

And then we’ll begin the slow crawl back.

A recurrent refrain of mine is that I am so glad to be old and from a family that does not live long lives. I am also glad to have grown up and lived during a period when America was a wonderful place to live.

I didn't know it at the time, but it was a splendid decision to leave no progeny.

The comparison is apt.
Barbarian populations grew to be much larger than that of Rome itself, to the point where it could field a competent army against its foes.
