The qestions that should be asked is:

are 'equal' for jobs, so why are they not protesting non-stop on the right to be drafted?

2. Politicians are pushing combat assignments. Why not the draft issue?

Because the Draft is a non-issue, not having been used since Vietnam. I do not believe the Draft could be reactivated in the USA at this time. Certainly, if it were to be used the issue of drafting woman woul d have to be addressed first. There is no way that parents and boys themselves would possibly agree to a system that excluded woman, after woman having been promoted as equal in every realm of society for 50 years.

So the existing law is a ridiculous artifact and doesn't effect anyone.

Any draft would have to include a large 'alternative service' which would be available to concientious objectors, and this would quickly turn into a giant welfare program resulting in slackers getting free stuff for life as having served in a capacity the equivlant of combat veterans. The CO's could conceivably outnumber the fighters.

No one in today's Army was drafted, so whatever issues the ladies have with their status the draft eligibility isn't part of it.

==...the existing law is a ridiculous artifact and doesn't effect anyone.

Apparently not ridiculous enough that if males fail to register they can be
barred from receiving certain federal benefits, employment and citizenship.

Illegal immigrant males of draft age, amongst others are required to
register.

On the subject of excempting women that is also out of date. They were exempted in the past per USSC in 1981, in Rostker v. Goldberg...

"The existence of the combat restrictions clearly indicates the basis for
Congress' decision to exempt women from registration. The purpose of
registration was to prepare for a draft of combat troops. Since women
are excluded from combat, Congress concluded that they would not be
needed in the event of a draft, and therefore decided not to register
them.
"

Not the case anymore!

Equality? Discrimination?

Comments anyone?

Correct (at least for draftees on active duty), by less than 6 months.

Airborne Ranger, Command Sgt. Maj. Jeff Mellinger, was our last draftee, he retired December 31st, 2011.
