A Collier County man accused of shooting two doe deer says he needed to feed his family.

The Naples Daily News reports Castillo told deputies he shot the deer because he was unemployed and needed food to feed his family. He said he was on his way home from dog hunting with his son when he spotted two deer running across the road. Castillo said he got out of his car and shot them.

In Olde England they would have hanged him on the spot
with the string from his own bow.

If the man’s story is true, leave him alone. Many game wardens known when to look the other way. Especially when the deer populations are out of control.

My dad, who grew up in the depression and lived on a farm, said some people ate the bark off the trees (those not on a farm). He never saw a deer during the Depression—and still 3 million starved to death during this time.

Never let a crisis go to waste

That’s a relief. I thought that, maybe, I had gotten into some bad liquor.

My brother in northern Michigan told me about a buddy of his that was a pretty well known poacher.

The buddy had a CO move just a few houses from him. Trying to be friendly with his neighbors, the CO jokingly asked the poacher if it was true that does tasted better than bucks? ( At that time there were no doe permits up there )

My brother's buddy told the CO : “I have no idea, I never ate a buck.”

“arrested Friday on charges of unlawful taking of doe deer, discharging a firearm from a public roadway and felony trespassing by projectile.”

that’s ridiculous. I don’t even understand WHY he needs to explain himself to any authority for taking car of himself/family in this fashion.

There was more than time I saw evidence of out of season hunting when I worked with poor families. I never said a word and neither did the sheriff if he was with me. All that mattered was the kids were being fed.

“lol

that’s SO funny! I never thought about it before ... but I never saw a deer in real life till I was an adult. Spent my entire youth hunting rabbits and squirels too (and birds)!”

You tell these whipper snappers that there were no deer, turkey, etc, when I was their age and they don’t believe you! lol

First deer I saw in the wild I was 19 (1976) and first turkeys were in the early 80s. Had no idea what they were. Thought they were turkey buzzards wandering around.

Yep. Squirrels, rabbits and dove was about it.

I remember reading some years ago of a state with a surfeit of deer, and basically a year around open season, where a charity was set up so that when a hunter bagged one, he could make a phone call for the charity to pick up the carcass.

They had fine tuned it so much that the hunter could even take a steak or two before they took the rest. The end result was that the homeless got to eat a lot of venison.

Corn has an unavailable vitamin, correctable by leaching in alkali - hence hominy and hominy grits. It's also missing at least one essential amino acid and needs to be supplemented with complementary sources of protein - beans, dairy, or meat.

Never heard of “corn poisoning”.

It's not exactly "poisoning." Corn lacks certain essential amino acids, so people who rely on corn as the staple and who don't have access to other sources of complete amino acids start showing signs of protein deficiency. This leads to a syndrome called kwashiorkor in severe cases.

You can find more info on masa and nixtamalization.at wikipedia but making corn into masa (like they do in Mexico) makes it more of a complete food. Eating plain ground up cornmeal and grits do a better job at creating that protein deficiency. This used to be a problem in the American South where poor people ate too much cornmeal because it is inexpensive

It would be a whole lot easier to raise rabbits than go driving around looking for deer to shoot.

Not necessarily

I look at this as God saying, if worse comes to worse, the meat is provided...

Oh yeah? And just how many deer and other wildlife would be left if millions of people descend on the forests with deer rifles? After a couple days they all would be wiped out and there would be no breeding stock. What do you do then?

Possum thank goodness things aren’t bad enough to eat possum yet. A prayer you see this as a joke and not a yoke to place around me neck.
