Student’s diploma withheld after he Tebowed on stage during graduation

A high school senior’s diploma was withheld after he Tebowed on stage during his graduation ceremony last weekend.

17-year-old Chuck Shriner played football for Fort Myers Catholic school and thought Tebowing after crossing the stage would make his ceremony “fun” and “memorable.” While his move elicited plenty of laughs, it didn’t go over well with the school’s administration. Shriner’s diploma was withheld at the behest of his mother, who is also a teacher at the school.

“They said what I did would give underclassmen inspiration to do something else, that it might lead to something else,” Shriner said about the administration’s reaction, according to the Naples Daily News. “So they were trying to set an example.”

Shriner actually had to clean the school’s gym as punishment, and his diploma was turned over to his mother who held it to discipline her son. Chuck unsurprisingly had no regrets.

“Moment in my life I’ll never forget, getting my diploma taken away for doing the Tebow on stage in front of (Principal John) Cavell. So worth it,” Shriner posted on his Facebook page.

Shriner shouldn’t be surprised about his punishment. Had he followed the news, he would have learned that a few students were suspended for Tebowing last December.

ANOTHER REASON TO HOMESCHOOL

This ping list is for the “other” articles of interest to homeschoolers about education and public school. This can occasionally be a fairly high volume list. Articles pinged to the Another Reason to Homeschool List will be given the keyword of ARTH. (If I remember. If I forget, please feel free to add it yourself)

The main Homeschool Ping List handles the homeschool-specific articles. I hold both the Homeschool Ping List and the Another Reason to Homeschool Ping list. Please freepmail me to let me know if you would like to be added to or removed from either list, or both.

“I know who Tebow is but I don’t know what “Tebowing” looks like. Anything like the Macarana?”

I had to look it up. The “Internet” seems to define it as:

(vb) to get down on a knee and start praying, even if everyone else around you is doing something completely different.

That’s what thanking/praising God in public (assuming the public isn’t thanking/praising God at the time) is called these days.

Pretty much rules out any public display of affection for God and makes fun of a popular Christian at the same time.

Left wing freaks who don’t follow football seem to be especially annoyed with him, hopeful of his injury, etc.

Thank you, Pontiac. The culture has been every bit as much debased as the Constitution, and it behooves us to defend both if we are to reclaim our nation from the barbarians.

I don't get it. When you are walking across the stage at a graduation ceremony, you already have your diploma. So how can it be withheld? Maybe the article meant to say it was "taken away." Journalism can be so sloppy nowadays.

My first reaction upon reading this was that a student was being punished for kneeling in prayer on the stage ("Tebowing") but it appears that the boy might not have been truly praying at all but mocking the "Tebowing" gesture. If so, perhaps he deserves to be disciplined for his action.

“Graduation should be solemn and monumental occasion not to be treated with levity which apparently is what this boy did.”

I have been to several HIGH SCHOOL graduations over the years, including my own a few decades back, and there are always a few who do SOMETHING, wave, bow to the class, whatever.

THINK: Why is THIS a Big Media issue? Why are they publishing THIS?

“I am in total agreement with the school and his mother. It is quite obvious that this is not a mature man but a child. “

Yes, he is 17.

He did not streak across the stage, he said no vile words. He dropped to one knee, and BIG MEDIA HAS TOLD US HE TE-BOWED. Big Media told us that and you bought it without question.

I think your response was EXACTLY what Big Media was looking for, with the added bonus that thanking God is now considered “lightening up” and “playing the clown”.

All because Big Media told us he “te-bowed” at HIGH SCHOOL graduation.

+1 My thoughts exactly.

I opened this thread expecting to be supportive of the young man, but the flags popped up in this order:
Catholic school - hmmmm?
Kid thought it would be fun - whaaa?
Mom asked school to withhold diploma - Mom probably knows what she’s doing.

“Graduation should be solemn and monumental occasion not to be treated with levity which apparently is what this boy did.”

BTW, I agree with you, but this doesn’t seem all it’s cracked up to be, especially as how his mother who works there is reportedly holding it up.

I don’t trust the media at all when it comes to reporting anything, ESPECIALLY politics and religion.

I try to be more tolerant at HS assemblies these days. Kids don’t just clap, they SCREAM as loud as they can. That bothers me more than individual but not indecent public personal displays like bowing, etc.

Looks like it wouldn’t have made the news otherwise — since she is reportedly holding up the diploma.

FU Big Media!!!!

“I graduated from a Catholic High School and they warned us not to “lose” the cap or we would not receive the diploma. We had to prove we had it before they would hand the diploma.”

Wow, I remember being told that at PUBLIC school!

I don't agree with you.

I see a potential future beloved CEO, and hope for the USA in his action!

His elders have managed to saddle him, and his entire generation, with a dysfunctional society and a crippling national debt.

At the very least he managed to tastefully maintain and display a sence of humor...and playfully steal the focus back towards the individual achievements of the actual graduates, and away from the solemn pompous ceremony of the “administration”.

SUSPENDED at graduation last December?

Nope, had to be some assembly and he probably knew he wasn’t supposed to do this anyway, but figured, “What are they gonna do, suspend me at graduation?”

Big deal was he/they bowed.

Actually I think the Big Media probably reported this just as a fluff human interest story.

But if they did have some kind of agenda I think the slant that the;y would push is more along the lines that you are drawing. Consider that this is a Catholic school and that this kid was having a bit of fun. What does the media consistently attack? Catholics. And what do the media always try to defend? Kids having a bit of harmless fun.

Yes the media has been on the attack for Te-Bow displaying his faith but this kid was not doing that he was pantomiming Te-Bow for the fun of it he stated as much.
