How Hatch Wooed Palin, and the Right
National Review ^ | 5/24/2012 | Robert Costa

Posted on 05/24/2012 10:32:26 AM PDT by Servant of the Cross

The two people least surprised by Sarah Palin’s endorsement of Senator Orrin Hatch this week are Palin and Hatch. In the Twitter and Facebook era, they became political allies the old-fashioned way: through handwritten letters and personal phone calls.

It’s an unlikely, politics-fueled friendship that’s fit for a Robert Caro book. Hatch, a soft-spoken grandfather, is one of Palin’s top outside mentors. He encourages her and cheers her. They share family stories, they discuss history, and they talk about legislation.

“It’s true,” Palin tells National Review Online. “He’s a warrior.” She respects his record, especially his work on the Senate Judiciary Committee, where Hatch has frequently been an influential figure during contentious Supreme Court confirmations.

Even though she is 30 years his junior, Palin has grown to appreciate Hatch’s historical perspective on Congress, the presidency, and the conservative movement. “I respect public servants who benefited from and grew under the tutelage of Ronald Reagan,” she says.

The warmth is mutual. “She and her husband are the handsomest couple that I’ve ever met,” Hatch says, smiling, as we chat in his spacious Senate office. “They’re both top-flight people and I got angry with the mainstream media constantly running her down.”

Hatch openly acknowledges that he has long and doggedly sought Palin’s support. For him, strong personal relationships are an elemental part of politics. They do not trump his principles, he says, but they have enabled him to become a force on Capitol Hill.

Strategic relationships may also be the reason Hatch keeps his seat. Beyond Palin, the 78-year-old senator has assiduously wooed tea-party activists and conservatives over the past two years, keenly aware of the challenge he faces in Utah’s upcoming primary.

Dan Liljenquist, a conservative former state senator, has mounted a tea-party insurgency against Hatch, but he failed to topple Hatch at the state GOP’s nominating convention. Liljenquist remains the underdog as primary day, June 26, approaches. But his campaign team maintains that Palin’s endorsement isn’t a factor.

“Sarah Palin can do whatever she wants, but this doesn’t affect our race,” says Holly Richardson, Liljenquist’s campaign manager. “Endorsing Orrin Hatch is the antithesis of what she says she represents — breaking up the old guard and bringing change to Washington. But I guess they’re friends.”

Hatch’s quiet courtship of Palin is a microcosm of how he has managed to stay ahead, unlike some of his fellow incumbents, such as Senator Dick Lugar of Indiana, who lost a similar primary race earlier this month. Hatch has gone out of his way to make friends.

Two years ago, Hatch’s former Senate GOP colleague, Bob Bennett, was ambushed at the state convention and lost his reelection bid. Hatch vowed to not let that happen to him. He would respond to the potshots; he would not let his detractors define him.

The plan was simple, Hatch says. Instead of merely reasserting his conservatism from the Senate floor, he would huddle with conservatives at tea-party rallies and conferences. He would overwhelm them with his liveliness and his commitment.

“I saw this movement coming before Senator Bennett did,” Hatch recalls. “A year before the Bennett race, I invited David Kirkham, a Utah tea-party leader and an outstanding man, to come meet with me in my office. I spent two and a half hours with him.”

Since then, Hatch has hosted similar meetings with countless Utah conservatives. He didn’t agree with everyone who stopped by his office, but he tended to ease concerns. He is encyclopedic about his record and takes care to contextualize the troublesome votes.

“From time to time, I have been criticized by some in the conservative movement,” Hatch says. “When they are right, I’m going to follow what they say. But most of the time, I have been able to explain why I voted a certain way or did certain things.”

Palin was another tea-party leader who gave Hatch an opportunity to review his Senate experiences, from the Clarence Thomas hearing to his near-victorious battle to pass a balanced-budget amendment. Hatch also says he learned from her. “She is the prime reason the conservative base really played a factor in the last presidential election,” he says. He keeps tabs on her speeches and appearances.

“She’s sharp as a tack,” Hatch says. “I like the way she defends herself and our conservative values.” When she was attacked in the press, he’d defend her in conversations with reporters, during talk-radio interviews, and on cable television.

Sources close to the Alaskan say Palin noticed Hatch’s consistent and vocal support. It drew them closer as friends and deepened their growing political ties. Palin didn’t mind having a Senate legend in her corner; Hatch liked having a tea-party star in his.

When Palin went on Fox News on Tuesday night to signal her support for Hatch ahead of the primary, it was a pleasant surprise to the senator, but not entirely unexpected.

Early Wednesday, the pair spoke on the phone. “I told her that I love her and her husband,” Hatch chuckles. “She said, ‘We love you, too,’ and that she’s here to help.”

“Look, it was a nice conversation,” Hatch says. “I can’t claim that I’ve been a major influence for Sarah, other than what she may have observed from all the fights around here. But I must say, I’ve watched her very carefully and I think the world of her.”

They may be from different generations, but it’s a fighter’s instinct that, in Hatch’s telling, binds them. “She’s had more than her fair share of barbs but she keeps coming back,” Hatch says. “I never give up, either.” In this race, oddly enough, that may mean killing off a conservative challenge.

From a purely strategic perspective, one can make a good argument that Palin’s endorsement is actualy a GOOD thing for Dan. Hatch had it in his pocket...he hoped that he could come out of the Utah GOP convention WITHOUT having to go through a primary...and I suspect Palin made him promise NOT to use it..the fact that it comes out now would suggest that Hatch is worried..have there been any polls lately?

As fast as the last two breezed through confirmation was Hatch even there?

Pretty picky aren't you people about a SINGLE act.

It ain't a "SINGLE" act Sparky.

See 'McCain, T' (T for Traitor), Arizona - Sarah Palin not only proclaimed that her vision for America was the same as John McCain's, she actually said that he was the 'Tea Party candidate' and turned her back on a REAL conservative, J.D. Hayworth. This isn't the first time Sarah lined up with a RINO, and it won't be the last.

Hatch went up against Kennedy many times, most notably during the Clarence Thomas hearings. They remained friends in spite of their differences and I attribute that to Hatch’s ability to be true gentleman.

Yeah, a true gentleman who supported and voted for Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Now THAT's conservatism in action (snort).

There was a time when Senators believed president's should have the nominees they chose. If Hatch has a fault its that he served during the 40 years of the filibuster-proof, Democrat-controlled Congress when Republicans had no power and lost every fight. Those old timers still think presidents should have their choices.

You'd have more credibility if you didn't support such a HUGE loon for President (snort).

“There’s no evidence whatsoever that the states are not investigating, prosecuting and punishing crimes triggered by bias and prejudice.

Even Attorney General Eric Holder has lauded the states’ efforts to punish hate crimes.” ~ Orrin Hatch

Sorry folks, but Orrin Hatch not only a pigfaced liar, he’s GOP-E+ and an ultra-RINO.

It’s way past high time for term limits on senators.

That’s what ANY discussion about Orrin Hatch should be about.

Bad move on Palin’s part, no matter how bendy, twisty, flaccid “TV” people try to spin it.

Tom Hoefling is a God fearing, America loving, Christian patriot and you ought to know better. So who are YOU supporting Deb?

Of course he was. Unfortunately, so were Collins, Snowe, Gregg, Voinovich, Martinez, Lugar, Bond, Graham and Alexander.

You make an effort to reach out to people that can help you win, treat them decently, stick up for them, build relationships with them, and they support you. In short, astute politician is astute. Gee. Imagine that.

This in particular really irritates me:

“Sarah Palin can do whatever she wants, but this doesn’t affect our race,” says Holly Richardson, Liljenquist’s campaign manager. “Endorsing Orrin Hatch is the antithesis of what she says she represents — breaking up the old guard and bringing change to Washington. But I guess they’re friends.”

First, Holly, I don’t believe for a second that that endorsement didn’t affect your campaign. If Palin had endorsed your boy instead of Hatch, that sure as hell would have affected your campaign. You guys would have been unable to shut up about it. And rightly so. Of course it affected your campaign when she went the other way. Lying in the first sentence of the statement does not really endear me to you or your candidate.

Second, what irritates me only slightly less than the lie, if not just as much, is your being a graceless, petulant c...ampaign drone about the endorsement. Just once, I’d like to see a campaign, when Palin endorses their opponent, say something like “Naturally, we’re disappointed. We think our guy, as the Tea Party guy, was the better choice for Sarah, but we understand our opponent has built a good relationship with her. And that’s okay. We hope to work with her in the future, but for now, we’re going to move forward with this campaign.” Which says a lot of the same stuff as you said without making you sound like a sore loser. I’m not a professional politico, I’ve honestly never even volunteered on a campaign, but I get this. And it drives me absolutely nuts that so many of the folks who draw paychecks for this do not. At least not when it comes to Palin.

Say what you like, Orrin Hatch is not stupid. He saw Bennett get beat for the nomination, he didn’t want that to happen to him, and he took steps to make sure it didn’t. He cultivated the Tea Party guys, he cultivated conservatives, and he cultivated Palin. And his supporting her and her family during the ugliness...considering how so much of the rest of the establishment has behaved toward her, that’s especially like water in the desert.

Originally I was supporting Haley Barbour, but he dropped out and then I was for Bachman, Perry, Newt and finally, reluctantly, Mitt.

Please don't drag Tom over. I'm dealing with enough of FR's insanity today. He shows no sign of any of attributes you claim for him.

Joe Miller, Christine O'Donnell, Doug Hoffman, Sharron Angle are all examples of conservatives biting off more than they could chew. And they weren't running for POTUS. EV is a FReeper and I'm sure a good man. But C'Mon Man! POTUS?! Are you nuts?!

I mean, that would be as crazy as endorsing Allen Keyes for POTUS ... oh, wait ...

GOP nominee Joe Miller was a solid winner, what killed us there was the GOP Senate endorsing the independent over the GOP nominee, it undercut Miller’s ability to campaign.

I'll say this: I would trust Tom Hoefling with America's future long before I would trust Mitt-Witt with it ('Mitt-Witt with it' - try saying THAT fast five times! lol) and I'm willing to bet there are any number of qualified and knowledgeable FReepers that could fill out the Cabinet of President Hoefling.

A few modest suggestions:

Secretary of the Treasury: my long standing FRiend, StephenJohnBanker, SJB would have our economy humming in NO time!

Secretary of State: Our Founder, Jim Robinson, because he is NOT a diplomat, he calls it the way it is, and he would be just the man to clean out that nest of vipers at State.

Ambassador to the United Nations: the one, the only, HUMBLEGUNNER! (why? because unleashing that wild man on the U.N. would be all it would take to drive those asshats OFF U.S. soil, GO GUNNER!)

Chairman of the Fed: SickOfLibs, who has a keen understanding of economics and combined with SJB, America's economic future would be secured.

Ambassador to the Vatican: QUIX!! Because there are just too few opportunities to instigate some highly entertaining events in world politics, and that would be one of them! ;) (just funnin' with you Brother Quix, you know I love ya man! ;)

Secretary of Energy: Landru, although I've not heard from FReeper Landru in years, his automotive and energy expertise would be just what we need to become not only energy sufficient, but HORSEPOWER SUPERIOR!

Well that's all the fun I can come up with right now, although I will close with the hope that I might be considered for Secretary of Defense, to be renamed the WAR Department, so I can actually BE the Secretary of War, which means that America would have but one policy dealing with our adversaries: we win, and they DIE!!!
(sooo, how am I doin'?)

Eliminate the Dept. of Education
Eliminate the EPA
Eliminate the Dept. of Energy
Cut federal staffing in other agencies by at least 1/3rd
Slash the corporate tax rate, and endemic regulations.
Interstate competition on health insurance.

There’s a start.

If Hatch has a fault its that he served during the 40 years of the filibuster-proof, Democrat-controlled Congress when Republicans had no power and lost every fight.

For the record, the only filibuster-proof Senate Hatch served in was his first, in 1977. It lasted two years.
