Gallup poll reveals interesting divide based on job classification

In a way, the fact that those in the professions - architect, doctor, teacher, engineer - support Obama while executives and business owners back Romney reveals how our economy has changed over the last few decades.

Construction, mining manufacturing, farming, fishing -- these are traditional blue collar jobs. And Romney is blowing away Obama in those categories.

Another big and growing category is retail sales persons. Here again, Romney has a wide lead over the president.

The president leads among service workers and professionals. What these people might have in common is their membership in a public or private union or professional societies dominated by liberals. Police, firefighters, teachers, health care workers, hotel employees, and also accountants, scientists, and nurses --  those with post-graduate degrees -- support the president.

There are fewer blue collar workers today than 20 years ago, more service workers, more retail sales people, and slightly fewer business owners. The biggest jump in numbers employed has been service workers who now constitute the second largest voting bloc behind professionals.

Then there are government workers:

In addition to the type of work people do, Gallup assesses worker attitudes based on government employment status. About 17% of all working voters in this sample are employed by federal (4%), state (7%), or local (6%) governments. These government workers, as a whole, support Obama over Romney, by nine points. There are, however, significant differences by type of government employment. State workers, the largest group of government employees, are the strongest Obama supporters. Local government workers tilt slightly toward Obama, while federal workers split their vote, 46% for Romney and 45% for Obama.

Engineering is one profession that has been pimped by government to create jobs outside the traditional realm of engineering and in the realm of regulatory enforcement. There are also fields of engineering that have watered down the application of science and mathematics once required in the course of studying engineering. What was once a profession that demanded reasoning ability based on knowledge of science and mathematics has introduced “cookbook” engineering based on knowledge of codes, regulations and specific software applications. Engineering isn’t what it once was, nor are today’s engineers.

When they were growing as kids they were the ones that always did what they were told.

Most are nice people but are unable to challenge their or other’s thinking.

if a category that includes teachers , who undoubtedly numerically overwhelm everybody else in the category, is only 51% Obama, then it tells you the category is lumped to obfuscate; you would have no idea from this whether doctors, engineers, etc. as individual occupations support Obama or not. The intent seems to be, “see all the smart, educated people are for Obama.”

You raise an excellent point and I’m inclined to agree that what you are suggesting is exactly what was done to manipulate the statistics.

These are all “professions” that either work directly for the government or use government to limit competition.

A lot of them are also high earners who can see the government taketh away what the government giveth.

The category where ObaMao, of course, holds the biggest advantage, is professional loafers.

Sadly, if you go through and total up margins in all of the above categories, ObaMao is still only behind by 1.56%.

When I needed an engineer for a construction project, I specifically did not hire an engineer who came out to look at the project in a Prius with an Obama sticker on the back...

I can testify to that. I worked for a midsized engineering firm where the president lobbied hard for an city ordinance to require certain surveys be done or supervised by licensed professional engineers. It was complete overkill for a task that could be competently performed by an unlicensed engineer with two or three years experience in the field. The ordinance passed and the fees charged by "qualified" companies soaked the businesses required to have the surveys conducted.

The reason more “professionals” are supporting obama is because there are a lot more lawyers than there are doctors.

The poll is misleading. Doctors aren’t supporting obama. Liberal trail lawyers will be supporting the socialist ..... I mean the democrats.

Holy cow! You nailed it. Teachers are lumped in with doctors, architects, engineers, etc? Why don’t they lump journalists and womyn’s studies professionals in that category, too?

About the first half of my engineering career was spent in private industry without being professionally registered. Many co-workers were just darned good craftsmen. I served with some distinct recognition. Later I went to work for a government agency. I found the employment ladder, controlled by union engineers, was very dependent on being a licensed engineer. I took the exam and passed the first time. In addition I also passed for a second engineering license. I went on to head an agency. In all my time as a licensed engineer I did not feel/believe my smarts or quality of work was increased by having the licenses. Of course I must admit my personal feelings are not what the bureaucracies or perhaps the public would admit/accept.

Yes, I have noticed a change in the opinions of the DR’s that lease office space from me. Though - all of them I know DID voted for him last time.
