Southern Baptists reprimand top official over Trayvon Martin remarks (Richard Land-loses radio show)
CNN ^ | June 1, 2012 | Dan Gilgoff

The country’s largest evangelical Christian denomination on Friday announced it is reprimanding one of its top officials over comments he made regarding the Trayvon Martin case, pledging to cancel the official’s national radio show.

The trustee committee of the Southern Baptist Convention’s Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission announced two reprimands on Friday for Richard Land, who leads public policy efforts for the Southern Baptists, according to the official press arm.

The first reprimand was for remarks Land - one of the country's most powerful evangelical leaders - made about the Martin case. The second was because Land lifted some remarks from another source on his radio show without using attribution.

The commission will move to terminate Land’s radio program, “Richard Land Live!” because of the controversy, the Baptist Press reported.

In March, Land spoke of African-American activists and the Rev. Al Sharpton as “racial ambulance chasers” in the Martin case, in which the 17-year-old was shot to death in Florida by neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman.

“When there is violence it’s going to be Jesse Jackson’s fault,” Land said on his show, according to the Religion News Service. “It’s going to be Al Sharpton’s fault. It’s going to be Louis Farrakhan’s fault, and to a certain degree it’s going to be President Obama’s fault.”

On Friday, the trustee executive committee said in a statement that Land’s comments were “very hurtful and offensive to the Trayvon Martin family and too many in the African-American community...

The problem with so many Baptists. They can not handle the truth.
Why don't you take just one Baptist fishing?
He will drink all your beer.
There are not enough Lutherans and Catholics in the bible belt to keep all the package stores in business. Somebody else is buying.

"The second was because Land lifted some remarks from another source on his radio show without using attribution."

So an apology for the plagiarism should have been sufficient and then Land should have stayed where he was? Seems to me there's more going on with Land than meets the eye and this is the public excuse. Otherwise, this wouldn't have been sufficient for them to remove him since they're not nearly so timid as people seem to think or they'd never have filed suit against the government over the HHS mandate. I think another shoe will drop before long with either the committee that did this being the real problem or there being a much bigger problem with Land.

JMHO

I see we’re getting in the hate-the-Baptists on this thread.

I do not hate Baptists. It is just that so many of them are so hypocritical. Drinking is a sin, but smoking at the front door is ok. Dancing is a sin, but interrupting the sermon with their amens is fine.
Like I said, while they preach the evils of alcohol the package stores down here are not staying in business with just the few Lutherans and Catholics that are down here.

“Oh dear. Someone nobody ever heard of lost a crappy radio show nobody has ever heard of.”

From your post, you have missed the real issue. The announcer told the truth about Jackson and Sharpton and the rest of the Professional Race Baiters Assn. members, including Obama.

When the Southern Baptists go along with this race pandering, something is rotten in their leadership core beliefs. One must suspect cowardice and an unwillingness to refuse to join the black/Democrat efforts to lynch Zimmerman.

Don’t forget Obama wants an excuse to have large scale riots so he can impose martial law, suspend the election, ad nauseam.

If the Southern Baptist leadership is no better than the cowards on that “counsel”, Southern Baptists are in deep “Skittles”.

I think Sharpton was James Brown’s Road Manager after his white one died of a heart attack. I knew him, but can’t remember his name right now.....I can see him....he was NOT attractive.

The FBI website shows that blacks kill whites at a rate 18 times the rate that whites kill blacks.

The same website shows that 93 percent of the 9000 blacks killed each year are by other blacks.

You made a bunch of unproven insult type attacks against America’s second largest church about hypocrisy, but we can measure hypocrisy by what the various denominations do in the voting booth, and Southern Baptists vote Christian/conservative by about 80% according to conservapedia.

, there has been a rash of Protestant-bashing, and indeed Baptist-bashing on threads where it is not directly related to the content of the article.

Isn't the post about the SBC condemning free speech?
Who does more bashing than the Baptists? They bash the use of alcohol, while like I said before the package stores would not be able to stay in business without Baptist support.
I am not bashing Protestants, I am a Protestant, I am a member of the first Protestant Church. I am a Lutheran, but we do not condemn the use of alcohol, only to use it when we think nobody is looking.
