Romney Surrogate McDonnell Says Obama Stimulus Plan Helped Virginia

By Dan Eggen June 3

Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell (R) wandered off script somewhat Sunday as a surrogate for the Mitt Romney presidential campaign, conceding that President Obama’s stimulus measures helped his state weather the economic crisis.

McDonnell, a potential vice presidential candidate who has sought to walk a tightrope between conservatives and moderates, acknowledged on CNN’s “State of the Union” that federal assistance aided Virginia in balancing its budget, but said it had no positive long-term impact.

“Did it help us in the short run with health care and education and spending to balance the budget? Sure,” McDonnell said. “Does it help us in the long term to really cut the unemployment rate? I’d say no.”

The remarks were part of a war of words between Obama and Romney surrogates in the wake of Friday’s disappointing jobs report, which showed just 69,000 jobs added in May and a slight uptick in the unemployment rate to 8.2 percent. The numbers slowed in part because of continued losses in public-sector jobs and continued weakness in construction.

Romney adviser Ed Gillespie said the stumbling economy and weak performance by the Obama campaign boded well for the Republican candidate’s chances in November.

Right on. This is exactly what the media (Clinton Network News) does. But he should have seen this set-up coming.

I agree with you and Governor McDonnell. Stimulus dollars have helped the economy in northern Virginia. This stimulus logo is on every huge construction project including extending the DC Metro Silver Line to Dulles Airport and widening I495.

Unfortunately I think you are correct on that Sir.

I wish it wouldn’t....but it’s coming.

It’s the truth. I hate when people complain that scripts are not followed, suggesting that lying is a good thing.

States benefited from the stimulus, because that’s where the money went. It didn’t help the economy, it helped states meet their own budget needs.

Should he have lied about it?

Of course Porkulus paid for a bunch of state workers and helped states balance their budgets. Even after a bitter fight, SC accepted the money for that reason.

He was right, though, that it made no long term difference. It was a waste, and just encouraged the excesses of the states to continue.

That has come to a screeching halt since the Repubs took over the House in 2010.

Sadly, there are people on all sides who will refuse to admit anything that could possibly be interpreted to help "the other side".

As you said, Bob's right when he says the 2009 stimulus money helped short term, but no long term employment was gleaned. I live here in Tidewater VA, and I've seen plenty of businesses fold up and disappear with no private businesses replacing them at the store frontages.

The more I hear from McDonnell the less I like him.

Ken Cuccinelli is the star in Virginia.

No one is suggesting that McDonnell lie. There is a way of recognizing the impact of “free money” on budgets without saying that Obama’s stimulus created jobs. It didn’t happen in CA

>> No one is suggesting that McDonnell lie. <<

Exactly. If McDonnell was guilty of anything in this case, it was only a matter of his not being “slick” enough. He could have avoided the WaPo’s extremely biased and misleading headline if he had merely said something like:

“Candy, with all due respect, that’s not the issue. If an alcoholic wakes up in the morning with a terrible hangover and then takes a stiff drink of whiskey, it may give some very short-term relief from his pain. If you want to call that drink ‘help,’ you certainly may do so. But a short-term fix like this really does nothing to solve the man’s underlying problem — and in fact, it makes his long-term outlook even worse.”

Why on Earth are you falling hook-line-and-sinker for the Washington Post’s spin? Their headline on this story is a prime example of left-wing bias in the MSM.

If you live in Virginia or nearby, you should know that the WaPo hates McDonnell almost as much as they hate George Allen. In fact, they may hate McDonnell even more, since no matter how hard they tried, they couldn’t undermine him during the 2009 election the way they undermined Allen in 2006.

Yep. But like the folks that watch the MSM for all they know; some here will jump on the soundbite and run with it. Funny how those who espouse political acumen here are snippet and sound byte prone. Heck, half the time nobody reads an article before spouting off on a headline what they perceive is comedic brilliance or great insight before getting smacked down by fact. I really really get a kick out of the lunacy displayed when great satire gets posted.

There are thousands of gullible people predispositioned to believe whatever the MSM tells them, and they post each and every day right here.

LMAO

True enough, although more of them live in Maryland.

>> there is No Recession there <<

No, really not true. I own commercial real estate in northern Virginia (just a couple of miles outside the Beltway), and I can assure you that the Great Recession has hit the local market very hard.

For example, my rental income has been cut in half since 2008, and vacancies are way high. Now the local unemployment situation is not as bad as in Ohio or Michigan, to be sure, but overall the local economy is still having a serious set of problems.
