MADISON, Tenn. - A man gunned down in a Nashville apartment complex Saturday night appears to be a case of self-defense.
Police said 28-year-old Javonte Johnson tried to rob Howard Bridgeforth at in the Mission Apartments on Saturday.
That's when Bridgeforth pulled out his own gun, opened fire, killing Johnson. An accomplice took off running.
A stray bullet went into a neighbor's apartment, where kids were sitting inside. No one was hurt.
But at least one of the four bullets fired went into a nearby apartment with children inside. Phyllis Richardson showed NewsChannel 5 the shattered glass door in her living room where a bullet hit on Saturday night.
"Oh my God. I am just so thankful that my children didn't get hurt," said Richardson.
Her teenage kids usually sit in the living room to play video games, but on Saturday they decided to play in a back room when at least four shots were fired outside in the parking lot.
"I am not going to get scared by what could have happened, but I will think about what did not happen," said her son, Malcom Brooks.
Investigators think it was their second apartment robbery that night, the other occurred just 20 minutes earlier and two miles away.
"He did the right thing by shooting him, oh yeah he did the right thing. If he was trying to rob him, it's good he had a gun to do that," said Richardson.
Even though that stray bullet could have killed someone, Richardson and her son said Bridgeforth only acted in self-defense and they would have done the same thing.
"You have to look at the big picture, he had to do what he had to do, I just hate that it had to come through my apartment," said Richardson.
Bridgeforth had a permit to carry that weapon. He was not charged, but the case will head to the District Attorney for final review.

I don't know about Tennessee but most states(except for NYC)don't require you to have a carry permit to have a gun in your house. What a stupid statement.
The story doesn’t seem real clear, but it may have occurred in the parking lot where a carry permit would be required. It used to be that if the gun was used properly in self-defense, even without a permit, no charges would be brought. I don’t know if that’s still the case, though. Madison was once a nice place to live and there are still some “pockets” which are. I only live a few miles south of there myself.

A hundred years ago, hangings of murderers, robber-murderers and rapists were about as frequent as are self-defense killings today, adjusted for population, which in 1912 was less than 1/3rd of what it is today.

Yep. Such a shame, because with all the retail shops and the mall out there, it could be a really prosperous area. Just another example of what happens when you toss pearls to pigs.
Shame that such a beautiful state has to put up with all this bullsh*t.
