Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal is rising as Mitt Romneys possible pick for vice president, according to campaign sources.
Last month, Americans for Tax Reform President Grover Norquist touted Jindal for the vice presidential slot in an opinion piece for Politico.
Norquist tells me he wrote the piece knowing that Jindal is a leading option.
Jindal is rarely mentioned in speculation about Romneys possible choice. A rising star in the Republican Party, he suffered a setback when he bombed delivering the Republican response to President Barack Obamas first speech to Congress on Feb. 24, 2009.
Adding Jindal to the Republican presidential ticket would bring to Romneys fold neither a swing state nor a major ethnic minority. But such political considerations are not foremost in Romneys mind. He has said he is only interested in choosing a candidate who would make a good president.
As he constantly points out, Romney is a conservative businessman, not a politician. He amassed a fortune of more than $200 million not by making cynical political calculations but by looking for the best often novel opportunities and by hiring people based on character, competence, and quality.
Jindal qualifies on all counts and has an inspiring life story that epitomizes the American dream.
Jindals mother Raj was three months pregnant with him when his parents came to this country from Punjab, India in 1971. The daughter of a bank manager, Raj had a scholarship to study for a doctorate in nuclear physics at Louisiana State University.

LET THE DEBATES ABOUT THE TERM -- NATURAL BORN CITIZEN -- BEGIN !!
Not interested in the NBC debate, but..
>> he bombed delivering the Republican response
Big time. I’m afraid a Veep candidate needs to be a good presenter and debater. Jindal fails here.
Next...
Can’t see it, Jindal brings nothing too the table.
Yeah, that whole leadership role he perfected during Katrina, and the more recent tornadoes, is overrated.
Now that’d be wise...Pick a guy who can’t legally run for President...
Maybe Romney’s trying to give the election to Obama like McCain did...
Oh boy, Chrissy Matthews is going to get a tingle over this. The left will be unrelenting in going after the birth issue. Regardless of whether or not it is valid.
Remember, their playbook is to assert something as fact, even if it is not and then keep asserting it with such conviction that people start to believe it as fact.
I worry for the great American sheeple.
there is NO debate, jindal’s parents were NOT citizens as the article eludes to. Will romney make a stupid mistake or name Sarah Palin as VP and show his smarts.
Now thatd be wise...Pick a guy who cant legally run for President...And if anyone raises the issue, it blows up in Obama's face.
Regardless whether you buy the reasoning of the Birthers (I don't), Jindal is every bit as eligible as Obama.
Their playbook sounds vaguely familiar to some things I’ve read here on FR...
So the guy makes one bad speech (and it wasn't that bad, just not exciting enough for those who prefer stem-winders) and you're happy to throw out the incredible leadership he has shown over the last few years?
I've seen him speak in many other contexts and believe that the "response" was an anomaly. Then again you may be a member of your local Toastmaster's club and eminently more qualified to be vice-president because of it.
Besides the fact that he is not an NBC, there are too many other better choices.
Trial balloons an’ all that.
Jindal was a member of the House of Representatives during Katrina - what leadership role are you referring to, please?
Martinez for VeePee!
It could be fun, however, wtaching the DBM (which has said the parents citizenship is irrelevant to the natural-born issue) turn on a dime and a find a reason ONE parent has to be a citizen to confer natural born status.
Now thatd be wise...Pick a guy who cant legally run for President...
Trial balloon, but this maybe a good way to get the qualification issue before the Supreme Court for adjudication.
Gaffer
Well worth it (if only for the inevitable Joe Biden “Macaca” moment...)
RE: Martinez for VeePee!
And how is Susana when it comes to fulfilling the “Natural Born” requirement?
