ORLANDO -- At the age of 49, Orlando man Junior Alexander Guy finally bought his first cell phone. Within days he wished he hadn't.
At all hours of the day and night, the phone would ring and callers would insult and threaten him.
He quickly worked out that the number he had been given by T-Mobile previously belonged to Trayvon Martin murder accused George Zimmerman, The Orlando Sentinel reported, and was the number Zimmerman gave to 911 dispatchers the night of his fatal clash with Martin.
When his 911 call was released, his phone number -- 407-435-2400 -- became widely known. Zimmerman got rid of the number and it was reissued to Guy.

One of the most common reasons for people to change mobile numbers is to avoid bill collectors. My fiancée’s phone receives calls daily looking for the previous owner, and despite her greatest efforts, they still call back, daily. It’s a different person every time. You’d think they’d get it.
This, however, is just sad. I really do wish that one of those idiots trying to avoid a bill collector got the number instead. They’d be WISHING for the bill collectors.
Ya might wanna make it more credible ... “killed that DXM drug addled seventeen year old drug pushing mixed martial arts wannabe. Wadder youse wanna do bout it? Wanna meet my cousins Lenny, Guido, and Donk, down at the docks?”
I think they should retire that number.
What is Corey going to do with her spare time, now that Zimmerman’s cellphone number has been retired?

In fairness, to T-Mobile, if GZ simply called up to have his number changed, unless an alert customer service rep made the connection, it probably would have been treated like any other routine number change. Depending upon when GZ requested the change, the story and his name might not have been widely known outside of the Sanford area.

Wouldn’t doubt if bill collectors is one of the top reasons. I would also think they would be really hard to get them to stop calling you. I would guess bill collectors are used to getting lied to. They probably don’t believe the person when they say they are someone else. I would also think if I was getting calls I am not sure how much info I would give to creditors in fear that they are not really who they say they are and trying to get info on me.
Another big reason is crazy ex’s or just people that won’t leave you alone.
My reason was a bit different. I had to change my last number after I keep getting calls from jail. I got a new number and then about 6 months latter some crazy old lady started to call me. Thought about changing the number again but just put a bizarre voice mail message on my number and the calls stopped.
Stupid T-Mobile....whatever happend to moratorium......
After annoying bill collectors would not believe me when I told them repeatedly that I am NOT the guy they were looking for, I got tired of the harassment and bought a whistle.
Next annoying call (and they were getting rude), I whistled LOUDLY into the phone.
No further calls.
