The 2012 Campaign Through the Eyes of ‘Walmart Moms’
Roll Call ^ | June 9, 2012 | By Shira Toeplitz

Forget Seamus, the Ryan budget or even the “War on Women.” Undecided female voters didn’t even mention some of the 2012 cycle’s most-hyped news topics in a pair of focus groups on Wednesday evening.

Walmart sponsored the 90-minute focus groups, which were organized by a bipartisan team of pollsters: Margie Omero of Momentum Analysis and Alex Bratty of Public Opinion Strategies. Moderators questioned two groups of “Walmart Moms” — self-described undecided voters who shop at the store at least one a month — in Richmond, Va., and Las Vegas.

It’s a surprisingly rare opportunity for inside-the-Beltway reporters to hear out undecided female voters at length. Even on the campaign trail, interviews often last a few minutes with the most quotable participants. Nonetheless, these women are exactly the fought-over voters for whom campaigns clamor in the final weeks of an election.

Here are a few takeaways from the questioning session:

1. Don’t underestimate the power of the first family’s image with female voters.

The same group of women that use to watch Oprah and Dr. Oz and knew that they were the end all of personal intelligence.

What morons!

The logic against the female vote actually makes sense - and I am a woman.

Where did they find these dumb broads? I read the article, and I can’t believe that most American women who shop at Wally World are this stupid.

Forget Seamus, the Ryan budget or even the “War on Women.”

What? How can we forget these important news stories?
(sarcasm)

1. Weren’t we all shocked, just shocked, that Romney put Seamus on top of the car in a kennel? That should convince us all to vote for Obama, because Obama is against putting dogs on top of cars.

2. Paul Ryan’s budget will throw Grandma off a cliff. The Democrat talking heads said so. So that should convince us all to vote for Obama, because Obama is against throwing Grandma off a cliff. Why, he even passed Obamacare to take care of Grandma!

3. In the war on women, the GOP wants to take away birth control. Only good Democrats such as Obama will make sure that women have birth control. And did you hear that Rush Limbaugh said something nasty about that girl? We should vote for Obama because Rush should not be so mean. And remember, good Democrats would never say anything so nasty. That was one of the lasting lessons of the Tucson shooting.

(sarcasm)

Per GOP protocol, run it's pale clone against it.

“Wally World are this stupid...”

I am an intelligent well read woman with a college degree and due to reduced circumstances find myself at the Wal Mart. It is a microcosm of America and “it ain’t pretty”.

My daughters and I try to make it funny by observing the clientele and have a mantra - “we Love you Waaal Mart, oh yes we do oh, and when we’re not shopping, we’re blue..”

You have to laugh so you don’t cry - see my post above -these have voting privileges!!

It's a safe bet that there were no husbands standing next to the women they interviewed.

Once long ago, I was in a barracks bull-session that turned political. So, I decided to mess with the minds of these beer-swilling, NASCAR-obsessed brother NCO’s of mine.

I put forth the question, “Which amendment to the Constitution has caused the most damage to America?”

One jackass said “The Second!” Another said the First. One said the Fourth.

I deadpanned to the group, “You’re all wrong. It’s the Nineteenth.”

You cannot believe the blank stares I got from the crowd; none of them knew the Constitution. So, I explained it:

“All of our problems in modern times can be traced to the day we gave women the right to vote.”

And there were silent, sage nods from the group.

I think the GOP should start emphasizing how many times Obama participates in leisure activities that don’t involve his family. Nothing in you face, but merely reporting that once again Obama hit the golf course for 18 holes of golf. Do this every time he sets foot on a golf course or a basketball course without his wife and kids. I think a lot of women are under the impression that he spends every weekend with his girls doing fun daddy daughter activities. The truth is... no involved dad would spend that much time away from his young daughters. The media covers for him and I am sick of hearing about what a great father he is because the media shows him occasionally taking them to a bookstore or ice cream shop.

This is a bunch of bullshit. I love how they make it appear as though not one single negative thing was said by anybody about obama. This was a campaign piece if ever I saw one.

The most glaring conclusion to come from that meeting is that these women will not make the effort to vote. Unless something changes to shake up the people, this with be a very poor turn out year. The GOP with Mitt O’lite isn’t going to shake anything up which is why they trotted him out.

I shop at Walmart occasionally and almost every single time I shop I am in line behind someone using their EBT/foodstamp card. Of course they are going to vote for Obama again since they see him as the one who “loads” their card up every month. He is their fantasy husband and fantasy father of their children. I know we can make fun of these stupid women but the GOP has got to start taking their vote serious and look at ways to open their eyes a bit to the real man who is vain and narcissistic and spends more time on a golf course than Tiger. Every time I hear from the GOP...”yes Obama is a great family man but his record shows that only 70 thousand jobs were created....blah blah blah” I cringe because I know that most of these women stop listening at “great family man” and think..”see even the other side knows what a great guy his is, so I am going to vote for him again because no dad that loves his family so dearly would let me down.” I am not suggesting that you outright attack him as a father but quit saying he is one every time you want to attack his actual record. It is like the GOP is trying to soften the blow of his record by gushing about how great of a dad he is and the only effect is that it gives these women the ok to vote again to give this nice guy more time to finish his great work.

“The logic against the female vote actually makes sense - and I am a woman.”

Agreed and I’m female too.

I don’t think taking away the women’s vote (not that it would even be possible) is the way to solve our problems. But I am starting to think we need to restrict the franchise.

I actually think only people who work and/or pay taxes should be able to vote.
