Ore. court: Scouts 'perversion files' to be public

The Oregon Supreme Court's decision Thursday to approve the release of 20,000 confidential Boy Scouts of America documents will give the public its deepest look at people flagged by the organization as suspected child molesters and show how Scouts kept them out of leadership.

The ruling also could make it easier for other secret Boy Scout files to be used in pending and future lawsuits from former scouts who claim they were molested by troop leaders.

The Oregon files, gathered from 1965 to 1985, came to light when they were used as evidence in a lawsuit in 2010. A jury awarded a record $18.5 million to a man who was molested by an assistant scoutmaster in the early 1980s, finding that the Scouts failed to protect him.

The 20,000 pages — representing files on 1,200 people — are part of a larger trove of confidential documents the Boy Scouts began compiling decades ago. In 1935, the New York Times reported the Scouts had 2,910 "cards" on men who were unfit to supervise boys.

-SNIP-

The Oregon Supreme Court ordered the names of alleged victims and people who reported on suspected abusers be redacted before the documents are released, which could take more than a week to accomplish.

The jury decided the Boy Scouts were negligent for allowing former assistant scoutmaster Timur Dykes to associate with Scouts, including Lewis, after Dykes admitted to a Scouts official in 1983 that he had molested 17 boys, according to court records. Lewis' attorneys argued the Scouts should have opened the perversion files decades ago.

I thought the Left was against private organizations keeping files on people (as well as the Police, FBI doing the same thing unless a crime was committed)?

I wonder where the ACLU is going to end up on this issue, or will they sit it out?

This might provide a legal opening for other lawsuits to open up private files if there are charges of illegalities. This could apply to the Black Panthers, Sharpton’s National Action Network (fraud), Jesse Jackson’s PUSH (money used for illegal foreign contacts), ACORN (criminal frauds, election fraud), George Soro’s front (CAP, Open Society Foundation/Institute, etc).

Beware of what you wish for.

I understand that his was a LDS sponsored Scout troop. They settled out of court.

The BSA is the one on the hook for millions, but why? If they kept pervert lists in order to deny perverts access to children, isn’t that what we want? Isn’t that a proactive, positive thing?

Methodists are very helpful to lots of Scouting units. I used to lead a Girl Scout troop that met at a Methodist church, even though none of the participants were attendees of the church. They just let the Scouts meet there as a community service.

They used to meet in the basement of our church until we had to boot them. We had one simple request of them, don't smoke in the church, they did anyway, even after being warned.

Not the kids but the adults supervising them.

Heck no, the activist legal system is out to can the boy scouts. In case you have not notice, all male heterosexual organizations are frowned upon by the Dyke overlords.

It is damned if they do and damned if they don’t for the Boy Scouts, just like the femi-nazis want it for males. They will get rich running the scouts out of business and taking over their property.

The BSA is being accused of having knowledge of potential pedophiles, as evidenced by these files, but not acting on them.

“Why does this smell of a slam at Romney?”

It is killing 2 birds with one stone; an attack on Mormons in general (as some sort of secretive cult) and an attack on the Boy Scouts ban of homosexual Scout leaders.

The number of boys who are in Mormon-sponsored units is about 12 or 13%. The percentage of Mormon-sponsored units of all units is higher than that because Mormon-sponsored units tend to be smaller than the average non-Mormon-sponsored unit, due to various factors I don’t have the time to go into here as I have to get some work done.

Sounds like basic math. 100 boys in 2 troops and 20 boys in 2 troops would give you an average troops size of 30, but you'd have more than 80% in just 2 troops and less than 20% in 2 troops.

Still, the smaller of the 4 troops would account for 50% of the troops!

Why does this smell of a slam at Romney?

If you're talking about the timing of this act of the Oregon Supreme Court, or the act itself, then I'd have to disagree.

An Oregon Court first ordered these records disclosed back in April 2010. The BSA appealed and they've now lost at the Oregon Supreme Court in due time.

Hi SM,
Your posts are getting longer, you must be healing up right. Glad to see you around.

I would argue that there are many things “wrong” with LDS Scouting and you listed some of them.

It’s why I see more and more LDS youth joining conventional units in my area. The LDS are failing their youth and don’t seem to care. Oh, they talk a good talk, go to WB, Philmont, etc., but implement next to nothing and/or released within 6 months of attending WB without completing their ticket.

My regard for LDS Scouting is very low, I’ve served for a number of years in LDS Scouting so I’m well aware of what goes on at the Ward and Stake level.

I’ve also served with some very good LDS Scout leaders, but they are so few and far between as to be statistically insignificant.

Flame suit on, talking “bad” (even if it is the truth) about anything LDS is sure to bring all the protectors out.
